AR-15 Purchase - Value and Assembly
FR | 10 Nov. 2008 | Self

Posted on 11/10/2008 7:14:34 AM PST by thefrankbaum

All,

Like many others, I am considering purchasing a semi-automatic long gun. Most likely, an AR-15 as .223 is still fairly easy to come by, and there are a number of "regular" rifles which use the ammunition, so I have some faith that it will remain available for some time period after other ammunition types are outlawed, should that occur.

We have a number of hunting rifles, some WWII German equipment, a few handguns, and plenty of ammunition. I am wondering if any FReepers can shed some light on the ease and advisibility of purchasing a kit from Model 1 Sales and a stripped down lower receiver from some other retailer and then assembling my own weapon. Do people advise against this, or does it seem like a good approach which will allow me to spend more on magazines and ammunition?

Also, I'm currenting thinking of purchasing an A2 upper and 20" barrel, but I know people have strong feelings, so I'd enjoy hearing some other input.

For the money, I went with Stag Arms. Dependable and rock solid. Shop around, Resellers are usually cheaper than the Stag Arms website. They're back ordered like crazy.

If you buy the complete rifle, it comes with a hard case and a Lifetime Warranty.

.223 through a 5.56, not a problem if it’s quality ammo.

5.56 through .223, no way, no how. It’s asking for trouble.

(IMHO)

Has to have a Fixed Magazine, (requiring a tool to remove it), in order to have the “evil” collapsible stock.

Check out the “bullet button”.

Welcome to the world of the made up Assault Weapon, also known to Liberals as the Scary Looking Gun.

Maybe you can help me. We're having a tax free weekend on guns and ammo here in South Carolina on Friday and Saturday. I looked at everything today and I liked the M-1 carbine. Anything I should know what to look for as they had about a dozen different types of M-1 Carbine? They went from around 500 to 900 dollars.

I also picked up some Tommy guns for the first time and realized why mobsters had to be big guys. Damn things were heavy.

Anyone know if Olympic Arms is still making FAs?

I could like that!, and I assume that with fairly little effort I could re-make it back to the original.

I’ve been absorbing all I can from the Fulton Armory site, they make some really good stuff and seem to be the penultimate M1/M14/M1A guys. I’m the first to admit that I need to know this weapon like my hand before I alter it, it would be criminal, and I couldn’t show my face on an FR gun thread ever again, if I screwed it up.

All it is is a stock swap. The action and mechanisms of the rifle remain unchanged. You can relatively easily convert back, yes.

Full autos???

Unless you’re LEO or MIL, the answer is no, not since 1986.

The only problem with the Stag is that their receivers are made such that you cannot install an RDIAS in one.

Gah, I hit send too fast. Other than that issue (which will not affect 99.99999% of purchasers, who have no idea what an RDIAS is, let alone where/how to get one or why you’d want one), it is an excellent rifle and well worth the money.

For low cost and reliability, I’d look closely at the Ruger Mini-14 in .223 (5.56)
Name a country that isn't a third world country that uses it....Name a mag other than a $50 twenty rounder MADE by Ruger that works 100%.
Model 1 or even M&A are good. Total assembly is not for a newbie, sorry, no offense. 20" is good, so's the 16". 1-9 twist for 55 grainers=cheapest ammo. Expect to spend over a grand. (mags+ storage ammo, practice ammo, sling, etc)

WHERE can you buy one today?. Even 80% receivers are backordered.
Gunbroker.com or Gunsamerica.com. Expect to pay double or more. Most barrels are in short supply, too. The ak-74 is relatively cheap, and the ammo is dirt cheap (230 bucks for 2160 rounds), mags are fair priced. The akm, (47 in 7.62x39) is still relatively cheap, too. Ammo fair. Mags still relatively cheap.

Must... Move... To... Nevada or Idaho soon... More freedom... and rocks! (than Lafayette, but I haven’t cleaned all the silver out of Bay area parks yet).

Um, no. Bushmaster receivers are not made by S&W.

Most AR-15 lowers are built by one of four companies, though there are plenty of other companies that make their own, and of course you can churn one out in a CNC machine shop in a few hours.

Here’s an FAQ on the major receiver makers, how to identify them, and who makes what:

No Class III Weapons License + Full Auto AR-15 = JAIL...

I'll stay with the Civilian Model.

Not that I think the Gubmint had any right to make Full Auto Arms illegal, but that's just me.

I love the sound of “shall not be infringed”. Too bad the Sheeple don't have a clue.

Yeah, but it *is* legal to get your Class III in some states, and an RDIAS (RDIAS = legal drop in, as it is registered) is the cheapest way to get into Class III weapons. I just mentioned it as it is something to think about for those who may want to preserve their options and be able to use their existing investments in ARs when jumping to the Class III world.

For most people, it does not matter at all and they will never go there, so they’re good to go no matter if the receiver is high or low shelf internally.

I'm in Kaliforni, so it's useless anyway.

The Stag I just got has to have a “fixed” 10 round (max) magazine. Use a Bullet Button, aka “tool” to remove it.

They kept changing the Assault Weapons Law to ban anything that they don't like. What a Pistol Grip or a Bayonet Lug has to do with anything is beyond me.

Now the 50 Cals are illegal, even though there has never been a crime committed with one. The idiocy knows no bounds.

Nevada is getting beyond redemption with the influx of Libs, just like Colorado unfortunately.

It’s Idaho, Oklahoma, Texas or the South. It comes down to the weather when you make the choice. I don’t like hot, so I would have to head North, but that’s just me.

Of course the wife likes S. CA, so I’m stuck. But I am well armed. LOL

But there is a gun Show in Costa Mesa this weekend, so things are looking up.
