So the ‘blame’ for the perception that these were in fact dinosaur tracks rests upon the original journalist(s), who, IIRC, didn't mention the counterarguments in the actual paper?

Sounds like good, real science, with the reexamination of the original claim by independent researchers; and that the masters paper students used what they could bring to bear upon what they observed to come to the conclusions they did. And now new field work will be done to examine and attempt to explain the anomalies.

Too bad most “social science” and “climate science” isn't conducted the same way.
