A Surprise for Obama in the Middle East
Jewish World Review ^ | November 4, 2008 | Frida Ghitis

AMMAN, Jordan — By now you can picture the Arab world in a frenzy of excitement over the elections in the United States. I certainly expected that when I landed here. After all, one of the candidates, Barack Obama, presents a sharp departure from traditional American presidents. He has a name that you can actually write in Arabic without pondering the correct spelling. One could hardly imagine anything but breathless anticipation and a strong dose of optimism at the prospect of Obama, the candidate with Muslim roots, moving into the White House.

Imagine my surprise, then, when the first person I asked about the U.S. election told me he thinks Obama is not experienced enough and believes John McCain would make a better president.

It’s easy. Terrorists, islamic and arab-socialist loons support Obama and Democrats, while oppressed western-minded, moderate, reform-oriented and thinking Middle Easterners prefer Republicans. Always have been that way since the 1950’s.

Yea, but, but, but, the whole world wanted Obama. You mean that’s not true? Wait till the whole world wants the US military to save them from their neighbors. Sorry...... but you’re on your own.

Wait till the whole world wants the US military to save them from their neighbors.

Oops - I guess they didn't think that one through when they supported him.

“He quickly read the astonishment on my face and pleaded with me not to reveal his name. Apparently, the views of this well-educated middle-class man are in the minority.”

Because being beheaded for speaking your mind is SO annoying!

I think most people in the U.S. media -- and maybe in the U.S. itself -- would be very disappointed to find out that the vast majority of people in other parts of the world really don't give a flaming sh!t what happens on the U.S. political scene.

I once asked a well-educated foreign-born friend of mine about his extended family's views (most of them still lived back in his home country) on a recent U.S. presidential election (maybe 1996), and his answer was pretty illuminating:

"If American had any idea how little anything ever changes from one administration to the next, they'd never bother voting."
