'At the same time it is important to remember that the national literacy level is about 12 years old and the vast majority of people hardly ever use these terms. It is far better to use words people understand.'

Better dust off my copy of Beowulf to get back to old English. But considering that it is really a kind of German (Saxon), influenced by the Vikings, Latin (Rome did conquer England), and Gaelic, maybe I should just go back to pre-English Welsh or Manx.

'The great strength of English is that it has a massive infusion of Latin.

'We have a very rich lexicon with almost two sets of words for everything. To try to wipe out the richness does a great disservice to the language. It demeans it.

'I am all for immigrants raising their sights not lowering them. Plain English and Latin phrasing are not diametrically opposed concepts.'

Holy smokes, they want to ban this? The only phrase I wasn't familiar with, but could have deciphered, was "nota bene."

Somewhat off subject; has anyone here used Rosetta Stone for language learning? I was looking at it because I wanted to learn Latin and wanted to pick up Japanese for the wife and kiddies.

Even further off subject; just watched the Life of Brian over the weekend. The exchange between the Roman guard and Brian over "Romans go home!" was brilliant.
