Dogs have evolved 'face reading' skills to detect if their owner is happy or sad

Mood readers: Dogs have
evolved to interpret human
moods

It will come as no surprise to dog lovers, but man's best friend is remarkably good at detecting our moods.

A study has shown that dogs look for signs of anger, irritation or happiness in faces in exactly the same way that people do.

Scientists believe dogs have evolved their 'face reading' skills over thousands of generations as a way of avoiding an unwelcome kick.

They say that dogs deal differently with human faces from any other image, and that their method of processing the information is the same as humans use....

...Moods such as anger, pleasure and fright are expressed far more clearly on the right side of our faces than on the left....

Happy days: Scientists say dogs can tell when people
are happy or angry

The researchers showed images of people, dogs, monkeys and inanimate objects...and filmed the animals' head and eye movements.

When the dogs looked at pictures of animals, their eyes flicked evenly across the image. But when they were presented with human faces they tended to gaze to the left, just as people do....

...A second study found that dogs have a much stronger bias to the left when looking at angry faces rather than happy or neutral ones.

The discovery suggests it is far more important for dogs to gauge a human's mood quickly and accurately...

~LOL~ we used to have a cocker that would grab the end of the toilet paper and take off across the house with it and our other cocker would go along behind and shred the TP all along his path. We used to come home to some real messes. I love watching dog body language.

there is no such thing as macro evolution. God made dogs that way and some of his nature is in them....a happy go lucky rambunctiousness. The ability to save his or her masters life. These are attributes of God’s spirit which the brainwashed dummy scientists always feel compelled to attribute to evolution...eventhough after all of these years clear transititonal fossils have never been found in the millions of fossils discovered. The fact of the matter is that for evolution to have happened, there would be many millions of fossils of various animals morphing into other types. It would be undeniable. But those are simply not the facts and only the weak minded and brainwashable types have fallen for this lie. If anyone reading this falls into that category, please, take a look at fhu.com and their wonderful downloadable Be Still exercise.

I'm so sorry to hear you lost your friend, it is never easy to say goodby.

BTW I concur with your observations about communicating. One of my three cockers I can carry on a conversation with and she knows what I am saying to her, it's all very natural; she is a bit of a strange duck compared to the other two; I think she would prefer being an only dog. She tolerates the two younger dogs, but playing with them is usually beneath her, she is a people dog and will sit quietly and stare directly at visitors until they acknowledge her presence, this is after she has run in circles of glee and located her favorite object in the whole world (a stretchy lamb she got on her way home as a puppy) to drop at the feet of the visitor to her domain. The other two are typical, silly, cute, cockers, but Daisy is very elevated, and any new dogs in the family have to be accepted by her. We learn from each dog in our life, don't we?

We had to put our Chow down the end of February. Got him from a Shelter ten years ago. Never could figure out how someone could “lose” a full bred Chow, especially our boy Ty. He was a wonderful boy, and he had many different facial expressions, for lack of a better term.

Anyway, I also swore off dogs after we had to put him down. First time in my life I had to be the one taking a pet in for euthanasia. I don’t cry, but I cried that day.

The wife first said no more dogs. Now she hints about getting another dog every few days. Not sure how I feel about it, but I really miss that big red Chow Chow.
