I was in high school when this movie came out, and it scared the bejesus out of me and my buds. We dutifully raided the local Army-Navy store and bought ourselves plenty of camouflage clothing, long-term camping gear, K-Bar knives, and other sundry pieces of potentially useful gear just in case the Cubans ever made the mistake of paradropping into our little Appalachian community.

Looking back on it now, it was pretty silly considering that the Soviet bloc never had the capability to do deep paratrooper drops inside CONUS, but we did not know that at the time and it made a lasting impression on us.

As an aside, my best buddy's dad, who was a grizzled U.S. Army combat veteran who had gone toe-to-toe, hand-to-hand with North Korean soldiers in the DMZ in 1969 and 1970 (that's another story), usually asked us where all the men were whenever he saw us watching this movie. They all couldn't have been locked up by the Russians and Cubans, leaving high school kids to fight. We thought that this was a good question.

You know what is funny about that movie is back in the 80s and the decades before, the premise of an invasion by the USSR was real.

Kids born in the 70s and later who are in their 20-30s now don’t understand the real fear of the cold war. ‘Red Dawn’ is science fiction (if they’ve even watched it).

My brother and two friends and I went to see “Red Dawn” when it was still first-run in the theater.

There was a scene with the occupation officers meeting with the collaborator mayor, and they were discussing the subversive element in the town. The subject came up of the mayor’s own son; the mayor objected as to why they thought his son was a subversive.

The Cuban colonel stated, “Your son is a member of an elite paramilitary organization: Eagle Scout!”

At that moment, all four of us cried, “OH $HIT!!!”

All four of us are Eagle Scouts.

I fought in two wars for my beloved UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and for the constitution which I swore to defend.

I have my guns, ammo and food stored away.

I am 68 years old and can do some fighting still BUT I would be more valuable as a trainer for the young folks. Not only teach them military tactics but more importantly the philosophy and values of the constitution and free market capitalism. Instill in them the rallying values and principles which make America great.

I will NOT leave my country simply because it was taken over in a coup. I will stay and resist and help those that are resisting in ANY way I can.

GOD BLESS AMERICA—DO NOT DIE FOR YOUR COUNTRY, MAKE THE OTHER STUPID DUMB BASTARD DIE FOR HIS BELIEFS!!!

I believe there is one issue on this thread that has not been mentioned; The assumption that the UNITED STATES MILITARY would go along with what might be termed a COUP.

If military leaders know the election and supposed takeover of the U. S. government is illegal they are not bound to obey the leader/dictator or whatever that person will be called.

There will be armed conflict because the military is OVERWHELMINGLY conservative. Yes civil war may come however I don't think the liberals/socialist/commies have a chance. Why, you ask, having worked for the DOD in ammunition logistics/production and safety I can say with surety that 99% of the defense ammunition workers are conservative. I don't believe they would help in any kind of government takeover. Just my humble opinion.
