I've always been called by my middle name since babyhood, since I shared first name (but not a junior) with Dad.....for things official, I use the first name by which I am not known.
It does have it's advantages, such as in solicitations...if any asks for 'first name', I know it's likely bogus.

I go by my middle name as well. Actually, for 6 years now. In the country where my family’s from, my first name wasn’t hijacked by hooligans trying to name their kids something “exotic” like it was in the US.
Over time, I met a lot of these hooligans that had the same first name as I did, so it prompted me to go by something that sounded less “urban”. My middle name (Lee) is about as “unurban” as you can get, so I went by that instead. I usually introduce myself to prospective employers as “Lee” and not my real name. I usually leave a better impression on them as “Lee”.
Consider it as “applied Freakanomics”.
BTW, my user name is a reference to my real first name and my favorite metal band.
