To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list. The Scars of Evolution:"The most remarkable aspect of Todaro's discovery emerged when he examined Homo Sapiens for the 'baboon marker'. It was not there... Todaro drew one firm conclusion. 'The ancestors of man did not develop in a geographical area where they would have been in contact with the baboon. I would argue that the data we are presenting imply a non-African origin of man millions of years ago.'" |

The writer has an interesting theory about aquatic origins for our ancesters, proposing the flooding of the Rift Valley for millenia as being a possible cause. There are oher areas in Africa with seasonal flooding where upright walking could be an advantage. She also posits obesity as being water/temperature related, but another explanation is that obesity would enable one to survive during seasonal starving times. Also, obesity in Africans occurs especially in the rear end, where it would provide a food reserve without causing the overheating that would occur if it were evenly distributed around the torso as it is in Esquimos and other northern populations.
