Satellites. From your vantige point they appeared to be stationary. They were reflecting sunlight until their position changed. Pretty common.

That was my first thought. It's also very difficult to determine the distance to a bright light in the night sky because there's no reference point.

That makes sense except that geostationary (geosynchronous) satellites must orbit directly over the Equator.
