The AAT protein is most likely alpha-1 antitrypsin. The first time I remember coming across it is when I saw my first patient with a chest tube for a spontaneously collapsed lung, i.e. a pneumothorax. The pulmonologist checked its blood concentration for being less than normal.

The default mode for strange looking letters in science is the Greek alphabet. The funny looking a is pronounced alpha. The funny looking b is pronounced beta, etc.
