SELMA, Ala. (AP)—A national cigar maker has announced it will close its factory in Selma, laying off more than 200 workers.

The company, Altadis USA, is shutting down the plant on Dec. 5.

Plant manager Vlencon Brown told The Selma Times-Journal that the 213 employees will be paid through Dec. 15.

Richard McKenzie, senior vice president of human resources for Altadis, said Nov. 14 is the last production day at the plant, which began making cigars in Selma in 1941.

Employees received notices Tuesday morning. The company cited government regulations, smoking restrictions, rising taxes and a decrease in demand for the blunt-shaped cigar as reasons for the closing.

"Don’t be a fool. If you believe cancer is an issue to be flippant about, I’m sorry for you and I have no further reason to talk with you about this."

Again---classic troll behavior. The thread isn't about cancer, but nice job trying to hijack it and make it about your pet cause of the moment. Somehow folks enjoying a cigar has caused you to get all high-and-mighty because you know of people who died of cancer. Guess what, we all know people who have died this way. But I guess that makes us FOR cancer.

Do you ever drive a car? Aren't you aware of the massive amount of people that die in car accidents every year? I demand you stop driving, it's for your own good. I can't believe you will be be so flip about it and continue driving, and you know you will. I'm sorry for you and have no further reason to talk with you about this.

You’re right, it isn’t, but if you look at #12, you will see how others reacted, and how it came to that. Not a hijack, just responses to other people.

None of which are lung problems.

The simple reality is there’s only one way out, and that’s dead. And unless you’re lucky enough to suffer a massive coronary while banging a Hollywood starlet your death will probably suck. Plenty of people who never touch tobaco find a cancer to die of. Live your life, have fun, know that you’re going to die, and try to make sure you got the most out of every lap around the planet.

My #12 was a response and addition to #8, nothing more, nothing less. The rest were my responses to others.

Someone once told me that they wanted to die when killed by a jealous husband. I guess everyone picks their own trip!

Yeah, so. What you’ve said is still showing clear and silly fear.

The real cause of the drop in demand for cigars is the fad ended. There was a big fad for a while, and like all fads it went away. And that big fad happened even while the world knew smoking was bad for you. The reality is that EVERYTHING is bad for you, and there’s some study or another that proves it. Most of us don’t feel like living in a world of constant fear, so we ignore that show everything you eat drink breath hear and sea is bad for you and do what we want. And that might include smoking.

It would be fast and relatively painless if the guy is a good shot. Not the worst way to go.

Right, whatever you say. You need the last word, it’s yours.

I’m just trying to have a conversation here. Don’t needlessly turn it into a p!$$ing contest. If you have a point make it. If you think this is just about the last word then you’re addicted to conflict and not actually trying to discuss.

They made Big Butt cigars? I've got a Big Butt hat & T-shirt. Used to buy them pretty regularly. Good smokes.
Te-Amos are good smokes also.
