An American Carol opens Friday

Remember that An American Carol, a conservative comedy, opens this Friday. (Trailer.)

I was part of a webcast with director David Zucker yesterday along with about 60 other people, (oddly enough, since I'm nothing special.) He noted that Bill Maher's Religulous is also opening this weekend. Whether An American Carol beats it or loses in attendance, a message will be sent to Hollywood.

Zucker was also concerned that conservatives are the sort of people who would say "that looks like a great movie. I'm gonna buy the DVD." But Hollywood almost only cares about the opening weekend take. So certainly at least if you were planning to see the movie anyways, drop in this weekend.

Just make sure that your ticket says American Carol and not Religulous. Just the movie theaters’ little way of ripping off unfavored movies.

Actually, that’s not true at all... I know some friends who worked at the local theater, and nothing is more of a hassle for them than dealing with people who have a ticket that’s not correct somehow, except maybe something that involves sold-out showings and incorrect tickets. The movie theaters aren’t Hollywood executives, they could care less about the political views of the movies that end up making money, as long as everything runs smoothly.

But, back to the topic, even my more liberal friends aren’t a fan of Bill Maher, and say they think American Carol looks ‘really funny’ because they think Michael Moore is obnoxious. However, it’s not like any of us have any money to go see it opening weekend =(

I spent a number of years checking to make sure theaters didn't misreport number of viewers. Greed was the usual reason, but don't think for a moment there aren't some liberal theater owners out there who would do something like that in a minute. Your friends are probably unaware of any irregularities in reporting and wouldn't be party to it if they were.

If changing a ticket is such a hassle, why do tickets show the wrong name so often? The last two movies I saw both had the wrong name on the ticket, initially. One was Passion, the other was Martin Luther. (I hate going to theaters and only do so for very good reason, like American Carol.)

Hmmm... I’ve got well over a dozen ticket stubs in my room now, mostly from over the summer (from free passes and such, I hardly spent anything) and I never got anything with the wrong name on it. However, our local theater is part of a big chain, so the owners are sitting in corporate offices who knows where, and the people selling the tickets are local college kids, and apparently there are secret shoppers and nice rewards if their jobs are done correctly, so there’s good motivation to give out the right ticket. Also, I didn’t go to see anything with stronger political messages than Batman or Narnia. Though it’s totally possible that in your theater, there may very well be liberal owners (I’m thinking the local hippie art theater would do what you mentioned if they showed more than one movie at a time) or just sloppy employees.

If a movie doesn’t have a pretty conservative message I don’t go to see it at the theater. My kids are old enough to see any current “must see” movies by themselves (with friends) so that I don’t have to. The audience acts a little more the way they used to when I was a kid. You can hear the dialog and the audience isn’t x-rated I mean.

I can’t see it this weekend because Bambi season opens Saturday. However, I plan on going next week after our first weekend of deer camp is over.

The health department has me quarantined with an active case of TB - IT’S A PLOT, I TELL YA! The hazards of having been a healthcare worker... sucks. Anyhow, I wouldn’t want to infect any fellow conservatives. While it might be tempting to infect a liberal audience... ain’t gonna do it with this one.

Hubby hasn’t decided if he’s going tomorrow and dragging our 19-yo son along or if he’ll wait it out till next weekend when I can hopefully go with him. He may even go twice. I’ll be sitting at home throwing a pity party unless I can find a torrent. I’ll still go see the real deal, but circumstances are currently beyond my control. ARGH!!! (cough)
