Gotta luv this. Goes to show you how inept Pelosi is in enforcing her own order. Where were her majority whips? :)

Sounds like a total FUBAR.

***He was actually ranting that the Republicans had pulled a “dixie”, whatever that is***

I think the term “dixie” means going south or going down (as in Repubs took the bill down to defeat)

Kerry is so hip

If a rework contains what prevents bailout and turns into a work out, why would the Pubbies in the Senate block it? There really is a liquidity crisis to deal with, so if it can be eleviated by issuing insurance to banks holding bad paper so they can segment out the bad from the good well then it should be voted through.

Yep--that's the only reason they didn't vote for it this time. And they don't need any Pub votes to ram through a bill that will give every left-wing group all the goodies they want, and call it providing "the American people" with "affordable housing".

Then, aided by the MSM, the Pub opposition will be made to look like mean-spirited pro big-business grinches, and McCain will doing NOTHING to stop this because he wants to be "bipartisan".

And Obama will be elected, and we will have a truly Socialist nation.

I so PRAY--literally--that I am wrong!

But, didn’t Pelosi shut out the republicans during the negotiations on this bill, and insulted them before the vote.

I am ticked that, what 35 or so repubs voted FOR this piece of trash bill. NONE of the republicans should have voted for it and then it would have been laid direcly in the demonrats lap.

Do the leaders in the RNC have any balls??? They should be pounding the demons over not only this waste of time bill, but for trying to cover up for those dems that are resposible and shifting blame to the President and republicans. They should be telling the American Public who tried to fix this 6-7 years, even 2 years ago.

aaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it fails or passes in the Senate, it goes back to the House for revote. If it fails, both chambers meet in a congressional committee to hammer out differences. If it passes, it goes back to the House for a revote. If it fails in the House, both chambers meet in a congressional committee to hammer out differnces and compromise on a bill that both chambers can agree on.

Both chambers have to agree on the same piece of legislation before it’s sent up to the White House.

Statement of the Communist Party USA

The Bush Administration has proposed a massive bailout plan of at least $700 billion (maybe as much as $1.7 trillion) to stabilize the financial system amid the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, a Bush appointee, and the President are pushing for the U.S. Congress to rapidly pass the plan this week with little debate and no amendments. The rightwing and the banks want a plan that gives a blank check to Wall Street with no oversight.

We join with others who call on Congress to slow down the process to ensure there is no bailout of Wall Street without a bailout of Main Street. The process should include full debate and transparency.

While the full extent of the current crisis and its impact on working people cannot now be fully known, we do know that the crisis is deep and not easily resolved. Furthermore, we must insist that the criteria for any plan to solve the crisis must be what’s good for the working people of this county and the world, not what’s good for the mega-rich and massive monopolies that got us into this mess.

The situation is so dire that some type of dramatic action is needed to avoid disaster for U.S. workers. Organized labor, community groups and others are increasingly angry at the bailout currently on the table. Any plan before Congress must:

1) Protect homeowners faced with foreclosure by restructuring mortgage rates to be in line with family income.
2) Create economic stimulus for working people and small business
3) Provide $100 billion in emergency relief to state and local governments wracked with budget cuts and diminished tax revenue
4) Bar CEO severance packages and cap the pay of executives receiving a bailout
5) Regulate banking and finance with transparent public oversight
6) Maintain public control over monopolies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that have a decisive role in the economy
7) Control speculation and increase revenues by taxing large financial transactions
8) Ban predatory lending and cap interest rates on all types of debts
9) End the war in Iraq, which is draining $700 million a day from public coffers

Developments are moving quickly and their full impact has yet to be felt, but let’s make sure that American workers—those who made this country rich—do not further suffer at the expense of the financial elites, those who have created this crisis.

Call Congress today! Tell them no blank check for Wall Street!

National Board
Communist Party USA

Pulling a Dixie...means going south on the issue. A pejorative.

But let me suggest that Pelosi gave the 93 RATS a pass TODAY, because she wanted a way for Obama to make a personal plea...Chicago-style no doubt...to bring their vote back.

The Messiah indeed.

SETUP. She either didn’t try to get her own party behind the deal, or knew that they would not approve the bailout and wanted to blame it all on the Republicans.

Interesting thought drag this out for Zer0’s benefit.

We’ll see how that theory plays out in the next few days.

thanks for posting this...

so here is my little summary:

Rove discussed the particulars of the vote. Who said yes, who said no....and some startling revelations. For example, the Barny Frank’s second in command of the House Banking Committee voted no. 5 committe chairmen who owe their positions to Pelosi voted no. Two of Obama’s fellow Chicago politicans....voted no... All of the freshman Democrats from difficult former Republican districts voted no....

Why?

The leaders of the house Republicans did not count their votes correctly. So Pelosi thought she could let some of her friends and freshman representatives vote no. Then, the combination of her inflammatory speech before the vote, and Republicans watching as she moved among the Democrats and they could see she was not demanding their votes lead some Republicans who were reluctant to vote YES to change their minds (for self-preservation...to separate themselves from the Bush administration and follow the will of their voters) and they cast NO votes. there was a 23 vote margin...so 12 votes moving from YES to NO killed the bill.

In the final analysis, we got lucky. The leadership of both parties counted the votes wrong. they thought they had it locked up. Pelosi was so sure that she gave her Buck Fush speech. But it was her giving a pass to her friends and terrified freshmen that really made some Republicans buck the Party and vote the will of their constituents.

My own congressman, Gallegly (CA24) had given a statement to the local newspaper the previous day indicating that he was going to vote YES even though it was a very difficult vote for him....and he somehow changed his vote to NO.

What a day.

Is this the same crap we did in the 90s when Robert Rubin was the Sec Treas? That time it was Mexican loans that went bad.

Are they stupid or greedy at GS??

This won’t help anyway, they are over extended in commodities and the drilling ban is about to expire. Gas and oil should drop over time.

What is a “Dixie”? When I was in high school in Kansas, we had a classmate named Dixie Due. The guys always joked about which one in their group was next up for a “Dixie Due”. Probably means something different in other parts of the country.

She may be crazy like a fox. Economy going down can translate to Obama’s numbers going up. Would she wreck the country to get a DemocRat elected President? Oh hell yes she would.

“They'll vote for it next time around ...”

That's what I am thinking: Pelosi knew exactly what she was doing with her anti-Bush rant. She drove the Republicans off the bill, gave a pass to those Dems who face relatively tough re-election contests, and then will put the left-wing goodies back in the next version while claiming that she and the Dems “saved” the economy without help from the Pubbies. The bill that was defeated was a turkey but the next one might be possum. Hope I am wrong.
