Burlingame Co. Recalls Chinese Candy For Melamine
CBS5 ^ | Sep 27, 2008

A Burlingame company is recalling a candy product after the California Department of Public Health warned consumers Friday of a harmful chemical compound detected in some candies.

White Rabbit Candy, sold by the Burlingame-based Queensway Foods Company, is being recalled after testing detected the presence of melamine in some candies at levels up to 520 parts per million, according to the department of public health.

The candy was produced by China, which has been associated with contaminated infant formula and other milk protein products containing melamine. The harmful compound has also been associated with a large recall of pet food, according to the department of public health.

The tainted food comes in plastic bags with individually wrapped pieces of candy inside. All of the varieties of the candies have a picture of a white rabbit with a black background on top of the bag.

No known illnesses are associated at this time with consumption of the candy. However, the department of public health said that individuals who have consumed the candy and have questions about possible health impacts should consult their health care provider.

Consumers with questions about the product can also contact Queensway Foods Company at (650) 697-6633.

When are the powers in the Food Safety department going to publish all the Chinese products we ingest as ‘food’?

So we will live another day to vote.

According to obama during the Olympics China was something we should aspire to be like. Lead by example and eat the candy first Barack. Then tell us how progressive and palatable China is.

In the most heavily regulated (repressed) society in the world outside of NK the government cannot even keep the food supply safe. So much for government doing a better job than the private sector.

I’ve been wondering just how much of this tainted food is making it to our shores.

For all we hear about what’s going on overseas, there’s not much information about what kind of risk the US is at.

Do you have a link to a video or anything of Obama saying that? I sure would like to pass it around.

No. It was during the Olympics though. He praised China and as I recall said we should emulate China as if they had put together modern, gleaming cities (Potemkin villages really) that were/worked better than the US. I do not have any direct quotes, but I am sure a review of articles from that time period would help.

Is Queensway Foods Company the same company that put out the Osama WTC candy? Or am I mistaken?

520 parts per million

That is really high. In S. Korea, some snacks contained mid-200 ppm of melamine, and it created a furor. I think 520ppm is about the range baby milk inside China is said to have.

In S. Korea, their food safety agency published hundreds of suspected items on their website.

Link: http://www.foodnara.go.kr/portal/site/kfdaportal/melaminedanger/

The information is in Korean. So I suppose it won't be much help.

Yup, big post here. But look at the size of this company from this excerpt alone. They even supply to Johnson and Johnson. If it is all one main source, then the tainted raw material goes out to all under different affiliate names and branding.

That is probably why there hasn’t been much exposure to the extent of this poisoning in the media.

The only thing that China has that’s vastly superior to us is the number of people. I’d bet their infrastructure rots.

The only reason corporations want to do business there is because labor is dirt cheap.
