KEY WEST, Fla. -- The famed six-toed cats at Ernest Hemingway's island home aren't going anywhere.

The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum announced Thursday it reached an agreement with the federal government that lets the 50 or so cats continue roaming the grounds, ending a five-year battle that could have resulted in them being removed or caged.

They’re more likely to knead with their paws if they were weaned too early or separated from mama too young. I’ve got a 7-year-old cat who was orphaned by the time her eyes were open. She nuzzles and kneads my armpits something fierce, and always has, so I guess I’m literally a “cat mommy.”

Many of my daughter’s rescues make bread..all were separated from their mom way too young..I am going to take 2 of her most recently rescued kittens that were 6 and 8 ounces when found starving..They are healthy now but the youngest kneads a soft throw I have often..also likes to knead on me at times..They will also suck on the soft throw...as will one adult kitty.

I have some puncture wounds on my leg..Must remember to add a thicker layer before she starts kneading.
;o)

LOL!!! We have two and one sits at the top of the stairs and the other at the bottom and they just stare at each other. There are usually toys strewn down the steps.

We can't figure out the point of the game but it seems to mean something to them...maybe they are playing "Basement Cat"

Every now and then, as I sit in my recliner watching this war film or that, here he comes up onto my ample belly.

He stays for 10-15 minutes just kneading away. It does a heart good, I gotta tell you.

“Excuse me, cat: can I have a life?”

Key West was not the only town known for Hemingway cats. In Cuba, Ernest’s hilltop home, Finca Vigia [Lookout Farm], once had fifty-seven cats roaming its grounds.

Evry year, I manage to reread one of “Papa’s” books. I love the idea of him. ;)
