The real tragedy of the capitulation at Munich is it pulled the run out from under the generals who were plotting against Hitler. Tho’ they’d passed up earlier opportunities, there was the real possibility of a coup if the Fuhrer was resisted. Appeasement not only whets the appetite of dictators but undermines their enemies at home.
Thanks for posting this. Add me to the ping list.
That is a big part of the Munich legacy. The generals had been in communication with the British, at least, regarding their plan for a coup in the event of war. Chamberlain could have worked to enable them. Alas, he was not the last leader to make that mistake. I hope the current administration is in contact with dissidents in Iran.
I have omitted the ongoing story of the plotters from my excerpts from Shirer's book because it would be hard to serialize without a bunch of recapitulation for new readers on each post. Also, as we know, their efforts came to naught. Until the 1944 bomb plot that blew up in their faces. But that will have to wait. In the meantime, welcome aboard.
