The Hobbit Hole XXXVII - ...Down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed!

Posted on 09/25/2008 6:43:34 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Yeah. We were at loggerheads for a while. (Do you happen to even remember what about???)

But we did get over it.

I think I do, and it is an issue I feel much less strongly about than you did, but here at the HH we don’t argue much!

The Hobbit Hole is the place we run to discuss anything ~other than~ the current hot topics. We’re kinda funny that way.

I thought the soon to commence filming of The Hobbit WAS a hot topic!

I hope things go well... the main danger as I see it is letting Luke just get bored and start hating school. That’s really the primary danger really smart kids face at that age. Then they decide that school is a waste of time and that learning’s isn’t fun. Sounds like right now he’s still got a good attitude.

Yeah. That’s our concern. We’re exploring options and doing what we can to keep him interested.

I hope his teacher is willing to work with you. It sounds like she recognizes that he is distracted because he’s smart and a bit bored.

Actually he recognizes that. But his main concern is getting Luke to participate in class discussions (Luke gets bored, but still retains the info) and improving Luke's writing. His handwriting is terrible. We're inclined to think that his brain is working faster than his hand can keep up.

And what we know is, in this school, that's a problem in 4th grade.

RE Nanowrimo:

Told the Mrs. this morning that, while I like her story idea, I’m not sure that 1) I can fit one of the characters correctly into historical context (POW) and 2) I’m not sure I could stand another three weeks of living with the election.

So, there’s that.

Hmmm... I still have bad handwriting, all my siblings do (Mom tried her best but we just didn’t care). These days, if you can read your own notes or make a legible grocery list, the rest you do on computer.

But if it’ll be a problem next year, that’s a problem.

I know with cursive, I was always bored because it took so darn long to get the words out. I like typing because I can type almost as fast as I can think - watch me during NaNo sometime! - and I’ve learned to scrawl print characters fast, but I stopped using cursive in school.

My mother had to address all my wedding invitations...

The problem with the handwriting is that he’ll be expected to put together paragraphs/papers. He could tell it to you. He could probably type it out. But getting it in handwriting on paper is a challenge. There’s no real accomodation in his school to allow for keyboarding.

Matthew had the same problem. He actually did better moving right in to cursive in the second grade. I never intended to teach him cursive, just printing then typing. But he picked it up on his own and something about the smoothness of it appealed to him and he could actually go faster. I told him if he wanted to learn it he would have to do it well and he actually did pretty well.

He types almost everything now, of course.

Ha! I just went back and read your post about the cursive! I hadn’t read it before I posted that about Matthew and cursive.

Funny how things work out differently with different people...

You know what...I think some kind of violence has been perpetrated between Steve and the coffee pot. Almost every single morning it looks like when Steve goes to pour himself a cup of coffee it throws him in to convulsions or perhaps they break into a brawl or something because there is ALWAYS coffee all over the counter. I’m talking like a half a cup of coffee is spread out across three feet of counter!

Well, this morning it is especially bad. I think the coffee pot won and has hid the body somewhere.

I wish... ugh... the alarm did not go off this morning so I was a little late... had horrible dreams all night. I’ve had very vivid dreams since getting pregnant and now they’re all turning into nightmares.

No matter, the important thing is we’re on good terms now.
