Proper protocol calls for one’s hand over one’s heart during the pledge of allegiance, not the national anthem. One only needs to stand during the national anthem.

Full disclosure: I am not an Obama supporter nor even a likely one and, by all means, please check 8 years worth of posts if you doubt me.
I don't put my hand over my heart when the Star Spangled Banner plays either. I stand and if I wore a hat, I would take it off (I don't but I would.) There are enough substantive issues to debate in this election without worrying over this.
