Ferrari 250 GTO sold for €20 million at auction making it most expensive car in the world

Ferrari 250 GTO sold for €20m at auction The most expensive car in the world

A car widely renowned as the most beautiful of all time is also now officially the most expensive after a model sold for €20 million at an auction.

Only 39 models of the legendary Ferrari 250 GTO model were ever built, from 1962 to 1964. It was already considered one of the most valuable cars in the world, previously thought to have been worth approximately €14 million. But with the recent record-breaking sale, it seems the Ferrari 250 GTO is even more valuable than had been thought.

The fall of the hammer that sold the car for a whopping €20 million smashed the world record to bits. The previous holder was a 1961 Ferrari California Spyder which sold for about €7 million in May.

Powered by a three-litre V12 engine, the 302-horsepower Ferrari 250 GTO can reach speeds of 283km per hour.

And just who snapped up the wonderful wheels? An unknown buyer from England…

Yeah, yeah, I know, “Lucas, Prince of Darkness” etc etc, and the whole leaks oil thing. Like synchronizing the carbs on that 12-cylinder in the Ferrari is any easier.

Actually, I wasn't referring to either. The coupe, I think, has cleaner lines. Now, for a drop-top jag, you have to look at the older D-type:

CRAP! I could build one from SCRATCH for less than that!

But people wouldn't buy it with the explicit understanding that it was made by magical Italian gnomes and fairies who impart their spells and potions into the construction to make it go faster than the imagination   :-)

And powered by 302 Italian horses which we all know are somewhat petite compared to American and German horses.

Does it come with an Italian dynamometer?

Per Wikipedia (giant grain of salt) 250 GTOs went for $18,000 in the early 1960s. Probably $125k in today’s money.

It doesn't surprise me, and it could be right. If you listen to Bill Cosby's "Natural Childbirth" bit, you'll hear him talk about his $17,000 new Ferrari...

If you could afford a 250 GTO, then you could also afford a swarm of your own mechs for any adjustments...or ship it back to the factory to have the windshield washed.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! I thought the same thing ... it’s just a year’s salary. When the buyer is revealed we should ping each other. My son said it could be Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason ... he has a huge Ferrari collection.

My apologies, no offense was intended.  Being a single, healthy, male stoat, my mind sometimes 'wanders'...

I had one.

Lousy gas mileage, hard to keep tuned up, too small to make-out in, golf clubs won't fit in trunk and you can't pick up lumber at Home Depot........oh, and it's a real pain in the neck to drive in the winter.

I finally traded it in on a Honda.
