Star Wars: Robert De Niro vs. Mel Gibson
Everyone in the movie business is buzzing about Robert De Niro walking off the set of "Edge of Darkness.
De Niro was back in New York Wednesday night for the premiere of Righteous Kill with Al Pacino. But he left Edge of Darkness abruptly last week after shooting one scene. His co-star was supposed to be Mel Gibson. It was that actors return to the screen after his poisonous 2006 arrest in Malibu that included an anti-Semitic and racist tirade.
Since then, Gibson whod already raised questions about his possible problems with Jews from his Passion of the Christ has been considered persona non grata in Hollywood.
Hes also had problems because his father, Hutton Gibson, is a public Holocaust denier who often writes for questionable publications.
There were questions raised in the British press this week about whether or not De Niro might have left Edge of Darkness over the anti-Semitic comments Gibson made to a Jewish police officer in that Malibu arrest. Perhaps, the papers thought, De Niro had Jewish ancestors.
But Gibson also addressed a female officer, who is black, as sugar t--s. This might not have gone over well with De Niro, whose lovely wife Grace happens to be African-American. De Niro is also a vociferous backer of Barack Obama for president.

Friedman has been on an anti-Gibson freakout since he got enrolled in the anti-Passion hysteria during the Boston College script leaking.
Gibson gave him ammo with his drunken tirade, but that was years ago, and Friedman is still bitterly clinging to his animus. Everything in this article is speculation except:
a) DeNiro walked off production of a movie; and
b) Friedman hates Gibson and everything for which he stands.
True, but sometimes he does it with a (bad) southern accent.
It tickles me when I hear people talk about "legends",
like James Dean for crap sake (what a bag of zeroes).
Maybe Gibson shouldn’t go to rehab. That way people can continue to think he’s drunk instead of finding out he’s actually crazy.
He did go into rehab and go away and disappear for a few years. His outburst was two years ago.
Okay, am I the only one who’d pay good money to see that fight?
This is ridiculous. Gibson’s problems happened YEARS ago now, long before DeNiro was ever approached to do this movie. I don’t think Bob signed for the part NOT knowing who else was gonna be in it. And I’m sure he didn’t wait til he got to the set and see Mel Gibson and say “that’s it, I won’t work with this guy - I quit...”
