Fresno jail starts releasing inmates

Fresno County sheriff's officials began releasing inmates from the downtown jail Tuesday as they prepare to close two floors and reduce the overall population by 800 inmates later this month.

After several pods in the north annex jail hit capacity following the long holiday weekend, jail officials released 10 male inmates charged with misdemeanor crimes including drunken driving and drug possession, Assistant Sheriff Tom Gattie said.

A dozen more were released later in the day.

"There's no more room at the inn," he said. "We knew this was going to happen."
