Failed to anticipate the damage Cuba would cause to the storm.
When Gustov was stronger, it favored easterly tracks. Weaker, the weather around it is forcing it more west.

if it’s going west of NOLA, it could be really bad depending upon how far west. The worst storm surge is in the NE part of a hurricane. The waves and surge could easily swamp the levees, overfill the lake and cause massive flooding..IF it’s close enough west to do that..

The media only hopes it will be another Katrina. It won’t. The, um, demographics have changed in New Orleans.

The worst part of a hurricane is the northeast quadrant, so if it tracks west the heavier winds, heavier storm surge and better possiblity of tornado activity could have a greater effect on NO. It is still a very strong Cat 3 storm...a few miles per hour more and it’ll be a Cat 4, not much of a difference when 3 and 4 are that close....also you could have less storm surge with a Cat 4 at low tide then a Cat 3 at the peak of high tide

“Katrina was a Cat 3 when it made landfall”
Exactly, and we all have to remember it wasn't the wind that caused most of the damage, it was the storm surge. We also have learned that the Rigt side of the eye is the worse side. New Orleans was luckily on the Left side during Katrina. This time the path of the storm is placing New Orleans on that most destructive Right side. Not good at all if that path continues.

This is not another Katrina. Katrina hit Mississippi harder than La. or the city of N.O. Gustav may cause La. more problems than Katrina did - a cat 3 hurricane is trouble.
The big problem is that Shep Smith is now reporting from the Quarter in New Orleans. That fact in itself will put this hurricane and its effects on La. right up there with the biggest disasters to ever hit the U.S.A.!
