Just heard reported on FoxNews that the McCain Campaign will be releasing a statement in 1-2 hours saying that the RNC Convention will be changed in a major way. Said something along the lines of a call to action for Americans. Some kind of telethon, fundraising event.
They spend so much money at them conventions,it would be great to hear less talk and more action!!!! Which is lacking in the government to begin with!!
Excellent point.
You've just made my point. Regardless of any good that might be done only the negative would be published.
-Have Sarah Palin host the telethon, raise tons of money
-Get Republican governors of LA and MS involved
-Have a very very humble convention immediately afterward
amen to that!
First Palin, now this. McCain is getting excellent advice, and more importantly is listening to it
If they had held a regular R convention, the MSM would have been running alternate shots of New Orleans suffering with RNC partying. Now, as a telethon raising money for disaster relief, that weapon has been neutralized
So you're saying "business as usual" is a better move?
Hardly.
Mixing politics with a natural disaster only spells media trouble. Let local elected officials deal with the situation without tying the republican convention into the mix.
If they put off the convention, the networks can use that as an excuse for not televising it at all (”Sorry. We had a prior commitment to air ‘My Hubby is a Transvestite’ and can’t possibly air your convention!”).
If the Republicans go the telethon route, they have to do it carefully to avoid looking like they’re exploiting a tragedy. On the other hand, doing SOMETHING other than days full of blowhard speeches from people no one wants to see can’t be a bad thing.
McCain has no official position to do that. He can, however, encourage volunteerism and community aid. And in doing so, he can talk to Jindal, Barbour and the rest. But he can't offer official help that doesn't come from a voluntary source.
Yes, it's part political theater, but dammitall, it's about time we learned how to do it.
Will the markets be closed Tuesday? Will my office be shut down Tuesday? Will the mail be delivered tomorrow?
Business will be as usual for the vast majority of the USA.
Actually there will be no mail delivery tomorrow but not because of any natural disaster.
They can't "put off" the convention. The process of nominating McCain and Palin must take place to get their names on the ballots. We've already had a snafu in Texas. They can "modify" the convention just to transact business and have less of the hoopla.
One thing true of all conventions is that they’re full of bland little nostrums designed to get the base a little bit excited but not too excited. I couldn’t even watch Michelle Obama—that shallow, token, hateful supporter of abortionists—speak for longer than about 90 seconds, and with the way the Republican party is going, I doubt I could listen to many of them either. If the telethon were interspersed with videos focusing on the value-of-life, free-market solutions, and danger-of-jihadists, it might make for a reasonably good show.
You are assuming a telethon to raise money to be put into the hands of corrupt Dem politicians
What if the telethon raises money to be distributed to organizations like the Salvation Army, while showing non-stop evidence for what the corrupt Dem politicians have been doing with the money so far?
I can't do that TODAY where I live.
We only donate to the Salvation Army.
Are they going in?
ooh, Ooh, OOH!! Here’s an idea... What if they made it a contest and set it up so you could pledge money and specify either Team McCain/Palin or Team Obama/Biden? So they’d have a tally showing contributions for each team. The beauty of this is that the competitive nature of Americans would help run up the total amount, thus helping the recipients even more, BUT it might help drain some of Obama’s donation resources over the next two months, and McCain won’t be accepting donations anyway.
