BREAKING ON FOX: MAJOR CHANGE TO RNC CONVENTION PER MCCAIN CAMP

Posted on 08/31/2008 10:01:31 AM PDT by GOPinCa

Just heard reported on FoxNews that the McCain Campaign will be releasing a statement in 1-2 hours saying that the RNC Convention will be changed in a major way. Said something along the lines of a call to action for Americans. Some kind of telethon, fundraising event.

This IS a VERY GOOD IDEA! If the hurricane disapates (not likely), it’s back to our regular scheduled convention. If the hurricane doesn’t disapate (most likely), it’s hello this is the RNC Hurricane Gustav Telethon. It’s putting country FIRST and party second.

They always do....with no fanfare or publicity.

Will the markets be closed Tuesday? Will my office be shut down Tuesday? Will the mail be delivered tomorrow?

Well if you have truckloads of balloons and confetti and caseloads of alcohol in your office every day you might have a point.

Business of the convention has to go on. What McCain is saying is that some of the celebratory aspects will be scaled back.

At this point, we don't know much more than that, and from what I've read the "telethon" aspect is still speculation. But it's an entirely appropriate move.

Will the media cover it?

So then, what’s different about that with an inclusion of an 800 number that says “if you’d like to help, call this number?” Isn’t that what a telethon is?

In a crisis, American people want to ~do~ something. Look at the lines at the blood banks in the hours following 9/11, and it wasn’t really needed. But it made us feel like we were contributing.

And in this case, there’s good potential to actually make a difference.

We only donate to the Salvation Army.

Are they going in?

Probably not. Only money belonging to secular organizations is needed. The ACLU would probably block the Salvation Army from getting anywhere near the storm or the victims.

sarc/off

The Salvation Army will be there. I would assume they’re already activating.

What if the telethon raises money to be distributed to organizations like the Salvation Army

You're assuming that the major media outlets would televise anything other than their planned convention coverage. I seriously doubt the alphabet media would go along. Remember, more attention is given to the sob stories these disasters generate...not the fund raisers.

If they toned down the convention and continued as planned with a split screen and often going to someone in LA, MS or TX, they could pull it off in a dignified manner.

Well, as far as the left-wing liberal media is concerned, we can invite Jesus and He can show up and they would still have negative things to say about the RNC.

Well, especially if Jesus showed up.

God bless ‘em!

Hubby always rolls his eyes at Christmas time because I simply CAN NOT pass by a bell-ringer without throwing in money.

Then I’ll come back to the truck to ask for more cash for presents and he says [rhetorically of course] “And what happened to the money I just gave you?”....LOL

[hey...it’s not *my* fault there’s one parked every hundred feet or so and I can’t “pick just one”]

He’s actually grabbed me by the arm and tried to drag me past them before I can do anything but I’ll pull out a dollar, ball it up, throw it towards the pot and yell “Catch this!!” to the bell ringer....:))

[after all these years, you;d think he’d just give up and accept it]...;]

NO!. At a telethon you call in to the phone bank which in this case (if they are going this route) will be at the convention site.

A crawler at the bottom of the screen with a number to call an established, honest relief organization is fine. But this is a tremendous opportunity for the GOP to show TRUE leadership(if they can) and do some real good....not just beg for money.

If McCain were REALLY smart, he'd extend an invitation to Obama/Biden to join the telethon.

Don't give them much of a chance to speak. More like an invitation to man the phones.

My wife and I both worked for the Salvation Army over Christmas breaks when we were in college. We are not physically capable of passing the kettle without contributing.

And your right Roccus, they'll go in without fanfare.

What many don't realize about the S.A. is that they're not a "social service organization" they're a Christian denomination (as in a church). They spread the gospel through their social causes.

. Yeah - and also reminding everyone that we can help each other, don't need government to do it for us. I think it's a winning idea.

Hand the money to the Red Cross for a DEDICATED ACCOUNT. Then, have the RNC audit the process.

Screw the Red Cross. These are the people that raised a BILLION dollars after 9/11 and then re-allocated half (500M) it to their general funds.

Give it all to the Salvation Army and let THEM go in fully funded to provide relief.

Oh and watch the libtards heads explode when the SALVATION ARMY comes in and does a better job.

Well, like I said above, until we hear from McCain/RNC about just exactly what changes there are going to be, we’re kinda wasting our time.

I’d suspect they’ve had all these same conversations. And with the leadership we’ve seen from the McCain campaign in the past two months, I feel pretty confident about where they’ll go with this.
