Actually a lot of the bittorrent sites are going down and I heard that Pirate Bay was next on the list. I usually use Isohunt which is one of the few that are left. If that one goes down, I’ll be SOL.

You could try placing XP in a virtual machine using VirtualPC? That’s probably the cleanest method, in my book.
You’ve got FReepmail.
The funny thing is that I could have both installed and bootable spectaculary easily on my mac.
Buy a Mac. Install VMWare and both Vista and XP. Can run both at the same time. Easy backup and restore. Works great
There is an update for Windows XP that will update the network settings for workgroups that have mix of XP and Vista machines.
I am expecting to need to do this on Tuesday for a family member in Uni. Thankfully the Uni’s IT dept posted a bulletin about the problem. So if this works (or not), please ping us back and let us know.
Dual boot is not necessary. Follow this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120
Make sure to d/l and install SP3 BEFORE you install the microsoft hotfix.
Prerequisites
To apply this hotfix, you must have Windows XP SP3 installed on a 32-bit computer.
Once you get the hotfix running, you can uninstall Vista.
Dual booting with Vista is a massive headache, you will find your best answer from Linux forums (people are triple booting Xp, Vista, Linux), because the Vista bootloader destroyed GRUB and LILO bootloaders.
I installed a second harddrive, installed Vista on the primary, XP on the other, and if I don’t wish to use Vista I hit ‘F10’ on startup and choose the secondary harddrive as the boot drive for that session.
I’m finding that out. Why in the world Microsoft decided to change the bootloader with Vista I have no idea.
I’ve had no experience with virtual machine software though I’ve seen it discussed on FR.
I'm going to look over your post before this one and see what it says.
It’s too bad one can’t just install GRUB or LILO to handle the boot order of a computer. That would solve a lot of problems huh.
You say I have to have 32-bit XP running? Does that mean that 64-bit won’t work in this case? If that’s the case, then why in the world didn’t Microsoft take this into consideration when designed the software? Rheutorical question, not really expecting an answer.
It looks like, from what others said, that my son will have to run 32-bit XP and not 64-bit in order access the network. Why in the world 64-bit won't run is beyond me but Microsoft has done dumber things over the years (ME anyone?)
Something else I thought of; does anything need to be done to the Vista machines to let them see seen by the XP machine?
You can install GRUB, you have to do it in a specific order using 3rd party software. Luckily I have the software here:
EasyBCD 1.7.2 or later
http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1
And some explanation here:
For a system with existing XP install and then adding a clean install of Vista:
http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/Windows+Vista
http://apcmag.com/how_to_dualboot_vista_with_xp__stepbystep_guide_with_screenshots.htm
IF you make any mistakes with the above and need to repair the Vista Bootloader:
http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/Recovering+the+Vista+Bootloader+from+the+DVD
And you can google this: EasyBCD vista sp1 grub
and get a ton of articles and tutorials on walk throughs.
You are starting with a clean install of Vista, so if you read this first, install Vista’s SP1 BEFORE attempting dual boot, then use the the apcmag.com it should be relatively painless.
The new laptop I’m supposed to do this for arrives to me on Tuesday, so all the above post is theoretical knowledge from me, I jump into this in 48 hours myself.
