You could try placing XP in a virtual machine using VirtualPC? That’s probably the cleanest method, in my book.
The funny thing is that I could have both installed and bootable spectaculary easily on my mac.
Buy a Mac. Install VMWare and both Vista and XP. Can run both at the same time. Easy backup and restore. Works great
There is an update for Windows XP that will update the network settings for workgroups that have mix of XP and Vista machines.
I am expecting to need to do this on Tuesday for a family member in Uni. Thankfully the Uni’s IT dept posted a bulletin about the problem. So if this works (or not), please ping us back and let us know.

Make sure to d/l and install SP3 BEFORE you install the microsoft hotfix.
Prerequisites
To apply this hotfix, you must have Windows XP SP3 installed on a 32-bit computer.
I installed a second harddrive, installed Vista on the primary, XP on the other, and if I don’t wish to use Vista I hit ‘F10’ on startup and choose the secondary harddrive as the boot drive for that session.
