A 6-year-old girl playing hide-and-seek with her grandmother Thursday evening found a newborn baby on Syracuse's South Side.
The baby girl, her umbilical cord still attached, was lying under some bushes where Lilliana Williams-Rodriguez went to hide, said the little girl's grandmother, Thelma Williams. The infant was partially wrapped in a black shirt, with most of her torso exposed, Williams said.

Her daughter, Precious Williams, tried to soothe the baby. Her friend, Tamique Trapps, 16, picked the baby up and cradled her. The baby started to cry. "It was tiny," Trapps said. "It was beautiful."

"Thelma Williams ran into the house and got a white dress to cover the baby. She kept watch until firefighters arrived and took the baby to University Hospital."
"Thelma Williams said it was lucky her family was playing in the area when the baby was abandoned. She called the tiny girl a "diamond in the rough."
It's so nice to read a story with a happy ending. I read so many sad ones that end tragically.

A parent who abandons a child can be charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, Connellan said.
This is a monstrous crime....it should be prosecuted as such, and not as a misdemeanor!
