from the article: "The bottom line, Psystar said, is that consumers have had to pay more for a computer running Mac OS X than they would have if Apple had not tied the operating system to its own hardware."

Can't be. Everyone knows that only Microsoft is a monopoly.

And I, for one, question the timing of this post!
During the v.p. announcement and all...

If Psystar hires Janet Reno to represent them there may be trouble.

Yeah, right. Apple hold a gun to my head and makes me use a Mac. What utter BS. When are we going to a UK system where such obvious idiot claims cause the whiner to pay up?

I’m not a lawyer, so don’t have detailed knowledge of relevant laws. But it seems to me there might be a case there. I think it’s a brilliant move to give it a shot.
I wonder if Apple wasn’t taken by surprise by this.

Yay! Apple’s stock price is gonna go through the roof! /sarc

There is no case, and it scares me that you think there is.

If there is no case, it will play out that way. As I said, I don’t know the legal intricacies. Apparently you are scared of someone having an open mind about the possible outcome of a lawsuit, which is pretty weird.
To: webschooner
I can’t imagine they(Apple) are surprised, more likely it’s a devious marketing scheme to come out with an actual os on a disk and grab a huge chunk of marketshare...and then comes Skynet and all that.
That’s my initial impression anyway. I’d buy a copy.

What's this? If you can't join them, steal their stuff and sue them?

Just interesting.
You can always find a lawyer who’s willing to take a chance on making a buck.
And it only takes one judge (for a while).
No dogs in this fight...
It seems like a simple case of piracy/copyright laws.
Passing along info. to fellow freepers.

I’m not sure what you’re asking. You can get OS X on DVD — just walk into any computer store that carries Mac stuff, or order it online. Getting it to run on a beige-box PC can be done, but it takes effort and the results are a little flaky.
The other alternative is to keep an eye on eBay or craigslist for an old iMac. Even the oldest G3 iMac will run 10.4, unless I’m mistaken; it won’t be fast, and you won’t get all the new niftiness of 10.5, but it’s a usable OS X machine for under $100 if you shop around.

How can a company with 10% of the sales, have a monopoly?

How can a company with 10% of the sales, have a monopoly? I am glad I read to the end of the thread before posting as I was going to say the same. This is one time low market share may work in their favor.

How can I claim monopoly when there are other computer OSs around. Apple made a business decision to not open up the OS. Someone should not be allowed to come along and say “Hey, we like your computer. We want to sell them and be your competition. Let’s have a look at that OS.”
