I think they are issuing a mandatory in the Golden Triangle in the morning. I’m 35 miles north of Silsbee and we are being told to leave—not that I would want to stay. I can’t...I have a 92 year old bedridden mother we have to get out.

I just recieved this CNN breaking news email:

— Mayor Ray Nagin orders New Orleans evacuated, calling Hurricane Gustav “the mother of all storms.”

Hopefully (if & when the time comes) that will be our mode of escape too (not a 5th wheel, but a camper/motor home)

We found one for a really good deal, and if we ever need to evacuate, we will hopefully have all 5 family members aboard....and travel w/our beds, bathroom and kitchen.

Four years ago, we left rather late, took two cars and found rooming at the last minute, and traipsed our belongings in during the rain squalls...miserable...

What we don't have is 'Grandma's yard' so would have to get far enough away where the storm wouldn't impact a small mobile camper.

Prayers for all of you in the path of this

“You need to be scared. You need to be concerned,” Nagin said during a Saturday evening news conference. “You need to get your butt out of New Orleans. This is the storm of the century.”

. . . .

Nagin said that the Westbank will be the first hit, with water being pushed up by a storm surge that could potentially hit 20-feet and higher. He said that because the Harvey Canal is not completed, leaving the area vulnerable to catastrophic flooding.

“For the Westbank, you were spared in Katrina,” Nagin said. “This is not that type of storm. The Harvey Canal is not complete. There’s holes in it. The surge will punch holes and will fill up the Westbank.

“This is not the storm to ride out.”

Quite serious - he was showing projectons from an almost 12 hour old projected path... not taking into account the jog north.

The weather guy on local Fox8 was saying pretty much the same thing - now I’m starting to wonder if maybe they’re right - maybe - if we’re lucky - this isn’t going to be as bad as some think.

???

Well, Nagin does have a competent governor to work with now as compared to the last one.

I’ve missed everything for 12 hours but it seems Nagin is overreacting to Gustav? Why is Drudge involved?

It jogged north, putting NO directly in the the path until/unless it moves again. It grew from 300 miles across to 900 miles across in a few hours and is starting to set its own path. It seems to be remaining a strong category 4 over Cuba and it hits the Gulf Loop that strengthened Katrina so much tomorrow. The NHC is warning them of 20 foot storm surges on the North side of Lake Ponchatrain. I do not think they are overreacting this time.

Things can still change, but someone is going to take a hit from at least a category 3 storm with the speed it is moving now.

This storm is going to have an enormous impact on a broad area. Again- it’s not JUST THE WIND- it’s the storm surge flooding combined with rainfall.

I don’t think he is going overboard. This storm could well be worse than Katrina for NO.
