Is there a reason that Cuba doesn’t get whacked more often? It just seems that something causes many of these storms not to directly hit it.

.
Having two tropical systems inland at the same time in fairly close proximity. Major potential inland flooding.
.
Cuba does get hit hard at times. But (A), being a totalitarian country, people aren’t asked to leave danger zones, they are told to leave, and, (B) after fifty years of Castro, there ain’t much of economic value on the island for a hurricane to destroy.
For Fay, we thinned out the freezer contents a bit and replaced the empty space with plastic bottles of water, the bigger the better. Didn’t need ‘em this time, but they didn’t hurt anything either.
Speaking of avocados, this has been a very light year for the tree. I don’t think there are ten avocados on the tree.
He’s in my prayers. Glad all of my sons live in TX and not near the coast! However, I have family in the Houston/Galveston area.

Latest update has it hitting early Tuesday, so he should be fine if he plans on leaving on the weekend. And I really hope that most NO businesses are planning on being closed Monday
buy it last minute and keep the freezer closed after you lose power an dry ice will keep everything really frozen for several days
you can usually get it at a supermarket ... Publics sells it by the pound down here
.
Thank you so much for your prayers. I’m sure he’ll be fine, I just tend to worry way too much...lol! He just moved down there a few weeks ago and this seems to be exciting to him. It is NOT exciting for me, that’s for sure.

and who pays for this kind of all knowing research?

Everything is good if you enjoy it. The only bad thing is letting someone convince you if you don’t follow their guidlines you are a bad or irresponsible person. We are all gonna die someday, I prefer death by red meat, a brandy, a good smoke with some good transfat.
He plans on leaving as soon as I tell him to get out of there. His girlfriend works for Americorps and is going to be helping with the evacuation if it comes to that. She’ll be put on an Amtrak train and sent to Memphis, so my son will drive her car north.

The squirrels eat all the pecans. All of them. Every year.
I could do that, but I had cleaned everything out before we went to TX this summer, and haven’t really restocked yet, so I’ll just wait. I have plenty of canned goods etc (and it’s not like I cook EVERY night...hehehe)

If dry ice isn’t available (e.g. around here), block ice is a good alternative. A 15lb block of ice will last up to a week in a well insulated ice chest.
