Live from ANWR - August 29, 2008: John McCain, standing next to Governor Palin, announces he has reconsidered his opposition to drilling in ANWR. Standing next to Governor Palin, whom he has just named as his running mate, McCain said “Having toured this barren wasteland with this fine woman, and having learned from her details of the incredible advances in technology that will allow oil development with minimal environmental disruption, I now fully support immediate drilling in this important national resource.”
I think that photo could use more “soft-focus” in certain areas.
I have nothing against her, she’s probably a great person, but living here in the closest state to her, I have practically never heard of her (except for threads like this). That says something.

Hopefully she will have lots of good help and support, but not from other mothers, most likely.
Working moms won't relate to her having the children close at hand, and at-home moms will think she's shirking her duties.
But I expect she knows that already. No one has mentioned how challenging it has probably been for her doing all that while living in one of the most unforgiving climates in the world.
She's one tough lady.
I suspect that they are hoping he will win Pennsylvania. I don't think it'll work.
If McCain wants to keep his maverick status, she would be top notch.
As a VP who focused on energy self-sufficiency, rooting out corruption and putting a whole bunch of polish on the "city on the hill", she would excell.
If she called on women to pull themselves up by the boot-straps and become meaningful part of society, giving them an example, it would be another great plus.
I like Kay Bailey Hutchison, but she has sure seemed way tired in the last couple of years. We need enthusiasm and 'git 'er done' attitude that she seems to have in abundance.
So, count me as a Palin advocate!

Joe Biden would shred her in debates, as she has no foreign policy experience.
Palin has very little executive experience. She hasn't been in office very long. Compounding that is the fact that there are many cities that have a larger population that the entire state of Alaska - she is governing a pretty small state, population-wise.

She has a special-needs baby who is only a few months old, plus 4 other young children.
Palin will not pull the "Hillary Democrats" into the fold, because they didn't want just any old woman, they wanted Hillary. To many women of a certain age, Hillary Clinton represented something which a younger woman simply cannot.
Finally, a potential loss would knock her out of the running down the road and might remove Palin from Alaska politics as well.
When the Ron Paul people were fantasizing about their VP nominee, Palin was the first choice. I would be much happier with McCain if Palin is the VP pick.

Well said, and - noting your gender - thanks for having the courage to say that.
The coming term IS NOT the time to be playing with candidates selected by the basis of their gender or skin color.
Bear in mind that due to his age and health, there must be considerable foresight in chosing a vice presidential candidate who is able to step directly up to the role of the presidency, instead of an officeholder who is there “for show”.
We are currently winding up one war, still involved in another (Afghanistan), and in all likelihood will see a new conflict with Iran between 2009 and 2012. We need a wartime president, and I contend that there is NO woman in American politics today who could fulfill that role. There is no Republican Margaret Thatcher available to step up to that responsibility; indeed women like Mrs. Thatcher are very rare political creatures.
We do not need a mother of several children - including her new infant - in the office of the presidency. She simply is not “qualified” to hold that office, if I may be so bold to state that opinion. Why not? Because - as a mother (and one claiming to be a “traditional mother”, I would think) - her “business” is with her family. It is one thing to be a mom and run a backwaters state like Alaska; it is entirely another to fulfill the official responsibilities of President of The United States.
If Mrs. Palin is willing to give up the full-time care of her children to someone else, perhaps then we can consider her other qualifications to [eventually] be President.
It’s common here to say that Barack Obama has no qualifications to be President, and I believe that those who say so are correct in their observations.
But Mrs. Palin hasn’t much more time in high-level elective office than does Obama, and she has the additional burden of her young children to care for.
She does not belong in the Presidency.
Nor does any other woman right now.
That’s my opinion, and I’m sticking to it....

It is definitely an issue because she is inexperienced. This equivalence stuff is getting ridiculous. McCain is not as bad as Obama and, now, Palin is not as experienced as Obama.
From everything I've read, Palin is a good conservative and her time will come if she keeps on being a good conservative. Let her get some executive experience and run for the job because she has what it takes to be President.

I don’t get where this whole “Mom will go to pieces” meme has come from. I have (almost) 4 kids, same as Palin has at home (one of hers is in the army, and my “almost” has already given me enough trouble to certainly count). I have had to put up with kids in hospital, one almost dieing of blood poisoning, one with invasive neck surgery, kids getting lost, genetic defects, stress beyond belief, and more vomitting than you ever want to imagine. In each situation I, the Mom, held together far better than the Dad did.
I have friends with similiarly stressed families, some of them where both parents work, and I have yet to see a Mom lose it over their kids.
My husband works. I am a stay at home mom. Sarah Palin works. Her husband is a stay at home dad. Why you (or anyone) thinks that puts her in the weaker position is beyond me....
Palin Signs AGIA License Bill
Starts Development on Natural Gas Pipeline
August 27, 2008, Anchorage, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin today signed House Bill 3001, authorizing the state to award an AGIA license allowing TransCanada Alaska to start developing a 1,715-mile natural gas pipeline from a treatment plant at Prudhoe Bay to the Alberta Hub in Canada. The Governor signed the bill at the Alaska AFL-CIO’s biennial convention.
“After dreaming of a natural gas pipeline for more than 30 years, Alaskans have now created the framework for the project to advance,” Governor Palin said. “This legislation brings us closer than we’ve ever been to building a gas pipeline and finally accessing our gas that has been languishing for so many decades on the North Slope.”
TransCanada Corporation has successfully constructed many natural gas pipelines and now operates more than 36,000 miles of natural gas pipelines in North America.
“TransCanada appreciates the support the Governor, the Legislature and Alaska have shown for the Alaska gas pipeline, and our role as the AGIA Licensee,” TransCanada Vice President Tony Palmer said. “Our company has started field work on the project in order to meet our target date for completing the initial open season within two years.”
TransCanada Alaska has already authorized specific aerial photography, engineering work and environmental gap analysis in support of the open season project. The AGIA license will be issued in 90 days.
Palin Signs Energy Package
August 25, 2008, Anchorage, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin today signed legislation that will help Alaskans combat the high cost of energy. The Governor signed House Bill 4001 and Senate Bill 4002 into law at the home of an Anchorage resident who took advantage of the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation’s Weatherization and Home Energy Rebate Program.
SB 4002 uses revenues generated from the state’s natural resources to provide a one-time special payment of $1,200 to every Alaskan eligible for the 2008 Permanent Fund dividend. The bill also raises by 50 percent the maximum amount of loans that bulk fuel bridge and bulk fuel revolving loan funds can make to communities and cooperatives. It also suspends the state’s motor fuel tax on gasoline, marine fuel, and aviation fuel for a year and strengthens the Power Cost Equalization Program. HB 4001 is the appropriation bill.
“Alaskans who signed up for direct deposit will see these funds on September 12, along with their dividend,” said Governor Palin. “In rural Alaska, particularly, many people are facing a choice between feeding their families and heating their homes, and they could use this payment from the state's energy-generated surplus to cover some of those bills.”
Carol Geczy’s home has been weather-stripped, insulation was added to the attic and crawl space, drafts were sealed and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors were installed. Approximately $5,000 was spent on the home with an expected energy savings of 20 to 30 percent. The improvements were made in part by AHFC’s Weatherization Program.
"The Governor's resource rebate, along with AHFC's Weatherization and Home Energy Rebate programs, are putting hundreds of millions of dollars into the hands of Alaskans to help combat high energy costs," said Dan Fauske, AHFC’s chief executive officer. "Investing money in making your home more energy efficient is just about the best bang for your buck you can get."
Governor Palin also signed a proclamation declaring September as “Energy Efficiency Month” in Alaska. The proclamation encourages Alaskans to lower their costs by conserving energy and by using existing energy more efficiently at work, home and on the road.
“Conserving energy and using it more efficiently doesn’t necessarily mean you have to sacrifice your quality of life,” said Governor Palin. “It’s the little things, like making sure lights, computers and appliances are turned off – and slowing down on the road, which will save money spent on gasoline.”
For all the same reasons. This could change history.
