>>My time is worth enough to make up the difference the very first time I don’t have to wipe and reinstall Windows, which used to happen two or three times a year.<<
I’m no lover of windows, but I have to admit I loaded Windows XP on my 700 mhz pentium III as soon as it came out and have been running it ever since with no problems whatsoever.
I have Windows XP dual-boot with OS X and both Windows XP and Ubuntu in virtual machines on my Mac.
Apple computers start at $599 for the Mac Mini. I've owned only Apple computers. Bought my first one from my oldest son many years ago. When you buy a Mac, you are getting a better quality machine. For the time and money wasted on PC fixes, upgrades, etc., you could have owned a Mac and been trouble-free (and virus free) for many years. Apple computers get good money on resale as well. I've had my present iBook since 2004 or 2005, and have not had any problems with it. I purchased Apple Care with it and have never had to use it.
Why don't you just get her a MacBook Pro so she can have the best of both worlds?
Everything's in there. Plug it in, turn it on and you can literally be on the net in a couple minutes. Actually, the networking was easier to configure than on my Wii or my PS3.
Yes, but do they last as long or have lesser problems than a Mac?
"Mac's do not allow you to run anything but their stuff, and that includes running other peoples stuff in an emulated environment."
Absolutely false. In addition to the Mac OS X operating system and applications, Mac can run Windows, Linux and other x86-based operating systems in native and virtual modes. And there are tons of applications for Macs published by independent softare developers.
"In addition they cost four times as much as a PC for the same performance."
Wrong. Macs often cost about the same or less than PCs with similar specifications.
Uh, no. Your opinion is completely wrong.
In addition to running all of OSX software, Macs can also run 100% of Windows software, either by dual booting into Windows XP or Vista, or by using a virtual machine (which is not "emulation" but the full OS running on Intel hardware) utilizing either Parallels Worktation or VMWare's Fusion. A Mac can run anything you run on your PC as well as all Mac applications. PC Magazine stated in November 2007, that the fastest laptop running Windows Vista was a MacBook Pro. Macs can also run the entire UNIX catalog of applications as well as LINUX.
Dumb question...are you sure you got the right MAC address? I noticed that my Vista had a bunch of devices with mac addresses (many virtualized devices) when I did "ipconfig /all" Are you sure you got the right one?
Also, you could turn off MAC protection and see if your machine works, then go from there.
Backs in the 90’s, I used to run a $99.00 special to make your PC boot quicker, or your money back. This was while I was an instructor at Georgia State. The number of professors that came to me was unbelievable.
Start>Run>msconfig. Done.
It was almost as good as, while in Germany, I advertised on various Base papers to “fix” your computer to operate on German power without a converter for $50.00. I even photocopied an image of the 220/110 switch in the back into the ad, and referred to it as an “unknown” feature.
In fact, all I got in the box was the CPU. Plugged in old keyboard, mouse, new widescreen monitor, our old router and cable modem. Didn't have to configure anything.
i don't know enough about computers to know if my experience is unusual, or to be expected, but I haven't had any trouble with my PCs in years.
“I have yet to get any vista laptop to work with my home wi-fi network.”
Turn off whatever software your OEM supplied for WiFi, and use Windows Zero Config. It just works.
And double check that you have the correct MAC address for the adapter you are using.
Good luck!
Great! So I can install that on my existing machines?
Seems kind of spendy and pointless, however.
;o)
With all other laptops I simply enter the persons MAC address from their ipconfig and they’re off to the races. With vista, I now tell people that my network doesn’t work with Vista.
I don’t want to spend the time...
The laptop I have in mind is $495. It’s all she needs. She isn’t gaming.
I’ve seen computers as a mere commodity and a simple tool for a few years now. It’s like buying a toaster. I want it to work and it does not need to be expensive unless I get features I actually want for the extra money.
I’ve played around with macs for over a decade. I’m not interested.
I actually turned the protection off in all cases and they had no luck. I just tell people with Vista that my network doesn’t work with vista and i spend my time on more fruitful endeavors than trying to get vista to work.
Nope.
Protected contents overhead, and constant permissions required to change personal hardware, plus no control whatsoever over Microshaft when it deems your new software "unacceptable".
Other than that...
Would that be anything like posting daily threads advertising a specific manufacturer's products?
