Say what you will about Rachael Ray, but the jaunty chef-next-door knows how to build a brand.

She began winning audiences with catch phrases like "EVOO" (for extra-virgin olive oil) on her first Food Network show, 30 Minute Meals, in 2001. Today, she has four Food Network programs, including Tasty Travels and $40 a Day. Her nationally syndicated, Oprah-backed talk show, Rachael Ray, is averaging 2.6 million viewers this season, and her Every Day With Rachael Ray magazine has 1.5 million readers. She endorses Dunkin' Donuts too--all to the tune of $18 million a year.

More established chefs also know how to play her game. Wolfgang Puck pulls in $16 million a year.

She was kind of tolerable until we learned she considers Jimmuh Carter the best President this country has ever had.

And her campaigning with Hillary.

But, I made her recipe for bread pudding a few months ago.
Fantastic

Re #20

I picked up “Kitchen Confidential” as a book on tape. That section had me rolling on the floor!

I heard he is working on a show with Mario Batali that is to be kind of a walking tour of food in Italy.

Are you mixing her up with Ina Garten?

Nope....never heard of Ina Garten.

One of these days she is going to stand over the stove a bit too long and steam her salines. :)

Jacques Pépin. Extraordinary chef/guy... I forgive him for being a Frenchman.

Bourdain’s TV show “No Reservations” is one of the only shows I watch anymore. The guy just has a down to earth manner that is refreshing.

Kitchen Confidential as a book on tape is GOLD.

Almost wrecked my car, more than once.

$40 a Day

I despise this show. She ends up sticking her waiters with horrendous tips so she can stay under the daily limit. Sends out a terrible message.

However he does have the condiment line out to help

I don't care what the FR food snobs say, his Essence seasoning is an outstanding addition to many dishes.

Ina is the Barefoot Contessa. She seems too snobby or upscale or something. I can’t put my finger on it...but she’s just not my cup of tea...maybe its the annoying way she brings her hubby/friends into each show.

Paula Dean’s recipes are extraordinary yet preparable...and delicious.

Alton Browne is my crush though. Love him (I married an engineer, so I must have a soft spot for nerdy types). He is awesome :)

Ditto that. Her $1.13 tips are an insult. Heck, anyone who only tips 15% should be ashamed of themselves, but Rae takes the cake with her pocket change tips.

Yeah, they should just explain to the dopes watching that tips aren't included in the daily limit and set a good example. If she ever came into my friend's place where I help him occasionally and pulled that, I'd tell her right off, I don't care who she is.

That said, I have a cookbook of hers and her recipe for a spinach-artichoke pasta sauce is amazing.

I have Essence and I use it. His seasonings are very good. We have a friend who works in food distribution...he and wife/kids got to go to an Emeril taping in NYC. The said he was funny and gracious and stayed ‘on’ during the breaks working the crowd. What impressed our friend most was that Emeril was really ok to the staff/crew...in his job this guy gets to see prof. chefs..and they can be awful to their staffs...he didn.t get that impression from E.

I posted a link to that pic the other day, someone called mamselle threw a hissy. I had a good laugh, she called me a porn addict because I said I like Giada.

Giada seems to spark a lot of jealousy. You should see how they talk about ‘bobble head’ on eGullet.
