Thanks for the web site. I sent it to my Sister who just purchased a S&W revolver for home defense.

IMHO the biggest single problem with women carrying is ...how?

I bought my wife and I matching OWB Bianchi holsters. This was not for concealed purposes, just simple carrying. I wasn’t thinking.

She can’t draw from hers. Physical differences .

The info on female carrying, holsters, etc. is really lacking.

Fashion makes hiding a weapon next to impossible for females.

Some of the information on that Cornered Cat site could cause a shooter to develop bad gun handling habits. Like everything on the Internet, you have to separate the chaff from the wheat.

Actually though I have seen my female cat, surprised by a German Shepard in our yard, puff up, back him down and chase him across the yard. Until the dog ran out of room to run, then, cornered, he turned, puffed up, and chased my cat back across the yard and over the fence. Funny as hell.

Great thread! Thanks for the ping Joe.

I like the analogy to cats...no one ever WANTS to have to ‘maim’ another, but one has to do what one has to do.

Lots of very detailed information in the article.

The one weakness is teaching the Cooper rules.

The Cooper Rules have been shown to be unsafe for most shooters.

I've been really happy with my Glock. Haven't got my permit yet, but I planned on
getting one of those vests with a special pocket to carry it.

Jeff Cooper rules
were the best we had when they were first developed.

They were developed for dogfaces and grunts.

They worked well enough.

The NRA adopted and the Training Department taught the Cooper Rules.

Over time the Cooper Rules were shown to be ineffective
as "ADs" did not decline.

The NRA Training Department researched a better way to teach gun safety.

The result of this extensive study over a number of years led the NRA Training
Department to reject the Cooper Rules that they had embraced.
This despite Jeff Cooper being on the NRA Executive Committee.

One can only imagine the arguments over many years
until everyone on the executive committee were convinced
that the new NRA Safety Rules were superior to the
then current Cooper Rules.

Anyone who knew Col. Cooper's massive Ego and Pride,
knows how heated these arguments were.

The result was that the NRA adopted the
recommendation of the NRA Training Department.

and issued the following NRA Safety Rules.

Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction

Always keep your finger of the trigger until ready to shoot

Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use

  • The NRA rules are all positive.
  • The words used are ones that everyone can understand.
  • They are in a sequence, such that if you follow rule one,
you remain safe even if you violate rule two and rule three.
  • I don't need to waste time and effort telling you that
all guns are loaded, because if you
Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction
    it does not matter.

Following the introduction of the new NRA Safety Rules,
the number of "ADs" were reduced and continue to decline.

However in those areas where Cooper Rules continue to be taught,
"ADs" have not declined.

When you plan to shoot there are more rules to follow.

OBTW; I learned the Cooper Rules sixty years ago
as a boy with my first BB gun.

I could repeat the rules and violated them consistently.

I'm sure you did too.

My Daisy Red Ryder was always loaded.

I have a question for the ladies commenting on this thread:

Do you have trouble racking the slide on a semi-auto?

The reason I ask is that my wife can’t rack any of my semi-autos. Not compact models or full-size 1911 models. If she were to use a semi-auto it would need to be one of the Beretta .32 caliber tilt-up barrels.

I got her a snubby Taurus Titanium light-weight 357 7-shot revolvers and she likes it better than any of my other guns. I got her the 38 spl Speer Gold Dota for it. The 357 recoil is pretty stout in such a light revolver.
