BATTLE OVER CONFEDERATE FLAG HITS HIGHWAYS
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | August 4, 2008 | Patrik Jonsson

Posted on 08/05/2008 12:11:25 PM PDT by cowboyway

TAMPA, FLA. - Chip Witte doesn't consider himself a Rebel. He doesn't hang Dixie battle flags in his living room, nor does he wear one on the back of his leather jacket.

Yet when the Tampa motorcycle mechanic saw the world's largest Confederate battle flag unfurl above the intersection of I-75 and I-4 in June, he felt a jolt of solidarity with the lost cause and lost rights that he says the battle flag represents. "I think it's great that they're allowed to fly it," says Mr. Witte. [Editor's note: The original version misidentified the highway intersection.]

The vice president of the CSA would seem to contradict your historical analysis. The so-called Cornerstone Speech text is at the link below.

http://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/index.asp?documentprint=76

The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution—African slavery as it exists amongst us—the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution.

Not specific enough, how is this?

Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery—subordination to the superior race—is his natural and normal condition.

“If we have another civil war it will probably be with the Muzzies when they become numerous enough to start demanding Sharia Law.....”

We’re currently in Stage 3

Stage 1:
Start immigrating - move into a country quietly

Stage 2:
Begin starting Mosques: “learning centers” community helps: food etc.

Stage 3:
Political activism: demanding rights, denounce derogatory comments/press etc.

Stage 4:
Get elected, pass laws favoring rights etc. move toward political majority

Stage 5:
Political control, Sharia Law

It’s a symbol that says “Are you offended by this flag? TOO BAD FOR YOU!”

Thanks for the reminder. I am from the south and have to shake my head when confronted with the diehard Dixie-ists who seem to wish that the south had won and that they were not living under the flag of the United States.

The south was wrong, but enslavement of the balck man was so entrenched, both socially and economically, that I don’t think there was any other way to settle the matter, other then with the terrible war that ended it.

One nation, one flag. Put it on bumpstickers if one must, but as for flying it in public spaces - no way. Take it down.

It's on private property.

The Tenth Amendment was laid to rest - de facto - in the Civil War.

Lot of truth in that statement. The 10th has mostly been a dead letter since the end of the war between the states.

I always come to these threads for my history lessons. Representatives of the southern States fought since the declaration of independence to preserve slavery. Throughout the first half of the 1800s, they fought to keep an equal number of slave states in the union. So what states rights were they fighting for.........the right to keep people ensleaved.

Damn them and damn that flag!

We got three hundred thousand
before they conquered us.
They died of Southern fever
And Southern steel and shot;
And I wish it was three million
Instead of what we got.

Oh, I’m good old Rebel,
Now thats just what I am;
For this “YANKEE NATION”
I DO NOT CARE A DAMN!
I’m glad I fought against it-
I only wish we’d won.

As long as it isn’t used in a racist connotation, its fine.

I don't like the Battle Flags connections with racist activities, however, I don't believe that we should put restrictions such as that on freedom of speech.

For instance, the KKK flew the Stars and Stripes in a march on DC. Should the Stars and Stripes be forbidden for use by 'hate groups'?

That's completely and embarrassingly false.

EagleandLiberty is right. The cause was (and still is) states rights. The occasion was slavery which turned out to be an albatross around the neck of states rights.

If Obama is elected, the occasion will be liberty itself.

Losers.

I want you to think about something.

If it wasn't for us 'losers' being solid red state conservatives you yankees would be a bunch of commies.

Of course, maybe that's what you want.

Ahhhh...yesterday’s version of the story had this flag flying at the intersection of I-4 and I-10...except that the two do not meet...I-4 and I-75 sounds more like it...

There was and editors note in the article to that effect.

Did you happen to catch that?

I applaud you, sir.

One of these days you might try and address the questions being asked. But that might be too much like work for you.

Forgot this part:

I hates the Constitution, this "Great Republic," too!
I hates the Freedman's Bureau and uniforms of blue!
I hates the nasty eagle with all its brags and fuss,
And the lying, thieving Yankees, I hates 'em wuss and wuss!

I hates the Yankee nation and everything they do,
I hates the Declaration of Independence, too!
I hates the "Glorious Union" -- 'tis dripping with our blood,
And I hates their striped banner, and I fit it all I could.

Hate the Constitution. Hate the Declaration of Independence. Hate the country. Hate just about everything. Pretty much sums up the lost causers around here.

Whenever I see the Stars and Stripes I think of the Union Soldier's who raped women and children.
