Wife lands a whopper

Gill Hudspeth

What a whopper ... Gill Hudspeth and her catch

A NOVICE angler is celebrating a huge haul - on her first fishing effort.

Gill Hudspeth, 58, hooked a 72lb catfish the first time she fished with a rod and reel on holiday with her husband and two friends in France.

Her huge haul blew her husband Maurice’s best ever catch of 42lbs straight out of the water.

Mrs Hudspeth, from Wilford, Nottinghamshire, today said she had never taken up fishing, despite the fact her husband has been a keen angler for 48 years.

She said: “Mo match fishes every Sunday, he’s very serious about it.

Chuffed

“But I don’t do it enough to be worth me getting a licence.

“We have been going to France for the past four years now. Usually I’m just chef and bottle washer but I decided to have a go this time.

“It was the first time I had done it with a rod and reel.”

Her 72lb catfish, caught within an hour of fishing on the first day of their holiday in June, broke the record for the lake near Le Mans.

Over the week Mrs Hudspeth landed 11 more fish, not far behind her husband’s catch of 16.

She added: “Mo has never caught anything that big. He’s got a bit of stick from people but he was really chuffed for me.

“I’ll definitely have another play. It was great fun, we had a fantastic time.”

That’s one lucky catfish, I would have humiliated him long before he got that big (LOL).

Truth is, I am not a catfish fan. If I catch one, I deal with it (I have caught many) fishing for other, more elegant species (LOL). I caught one little one in Texas off my dock a LONG time ago, hooked him in the face, got bit by his gill while trying to release him. I caught him again a week later, off my dock, with the hook still in his face.

My sister and her husband live in Alabama. They call me all the time and give me minute to the minute reports on camping at night on a boat, and pulling in big cats from the Tennessee River.

Those French catfish better stay away from my sister, she’s a catfishing fool.

Now, that’s a catfish like I’m used to seeing (well, not that BIG but that shape).

Yes, she does have quite pronounced pedal edema, doesn’t she? Poor thing. Hopefully this famous fishing expedition will prompt her to get a bit more exercise and improve her circulation.

Quite sad.

There's nothing quite like having your photo, showing unpleasant things, being published for billions of people the world over to see to serve as motivation for making changes in one's life.  (This general rule seems to apply to everyone on the planet except for Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Amy Winehouse).

Dang, you are talking about Reelfoot Lake.

The bluegills there will give you a broken shoulder.

Don’t EVEN ASK about the kamikazi ducks. They’ll really mess you up (LOL).

You have to be tough to live there, and assimilate. There ain’t no such thing as pretensions there.

And they don’t sell fried crappie anymore. Well, maybe some of them folks do, they’ve been known to buck the system (LOL).

“Bear in mind that it’s a French catfish :-)”

Yea, I noticed it is skinny. Heck the shad there are probably socialists.

I did notice that catfish was poor lookin.

You could put that sucker in an east Tennessee lake and he’d fatten up real quick on the gizzard and threadfin shad.

Golly! That fishin’ seems to run in your family, truly a fearsome bunch. Between the two of you I’m surprised there’s any fish left east of the Mississippi. LOL!

I saw a show awhile back of a couple guys catching catfish with their hands along riverbanks or swamps, can’t remember which in the south. Couldn’t pay me to do that, I’d sure as heck find a gator or water moccasin. That just isn’t my idea of fun. :-)

Noodling?

My Daddy turned me and my siblings on to fishing at an early age. I hate to think about all the cats nibbling away nearby when I was swimming in some of those lakes.
I prefer the rod and reel method, but the noodling thing has garnered a lot of headlines in recent years.

I’ve encountered enough snapping turtles over the years, I don’t the have the courage to noodle.

Fishy treat for fresher feet The Sun NewsExpatsExpats News

Fishy treat for fresher feet

Tracy Roberts, 33, of Rockville, Md. has her toes nibbled on by a type of carp called garra rufa, or doctor fish, during a fish pedicure treatment at Yvonne Hair and Nails salon in Alexandria, Va.

Fishy ... manicure

IT’S a fishy way of freshening up your feet – but letting carp nibble on your tootsies is the latest spa treatment to net beauty junkies.

Fish pedicures are creating something of a splash in the Washington D.C. area, where a northern Virginia spa has been offering them for the past four months.

Salon owner John Ho said he wanted to come up with something unique while finding a replacement for pedicures that use razors to scrape off dead skin.

He said: “I know people were a little intimidated at first, but I just said ‘let’s give it a shot’.”

Customers of the treatment, which is popular in Turkey and some Asian countries quickly became hooked.

After up to half-an-hour of having your feet nibbled by a tank of hungry fish, customers then get a standard pedicure, which is made easier by the fish’s work.

Ticklish

Mr Ho, who charges $35 for a 15 minute session and $50 for half-an-hour, has more than 1,000 fish at his salon.

Around 100 fish are in each individual pedicure tank at any one time.

Customer Patsy Fisher, 42, admitted she was nervous as she prepared for her first fish pedicure.

But her fears dissolved into laughter after she put her feet in the tank and the fish swarmed to her toes.

“It’s a little ticklish, actually,” she said.

Mr Ho said the hot water in which the fish thrive doesn’t support plant or aquatic life, so they learned to feed on whatever food sources were available - including dead, flaking skin.

They leave live skin alone because, without teeth, they can’t bite it off.

Mr Ho is considering a full-body fish treatment to treat psoriasis and other ailments.

I am willing to pay any FR noodler $25 who will go to the bayou I went to with my former editor (mentor) in Southwest Louisiana.

He showed me this levy on a bayou in Louisiana, to convince me I should go canoeing with him there. I looked down and saw about 50 cottonmouths and said “No Thanks.”

I guess I am a pansy at times.

Maybe I’ll toughen up someday. I still don’t like taking catfish off the hook (I have many times). These cats have something that stings the *** out of your hands, their sharp gills.

My sister is into catfishing. I’d like to be hiding in the water someday and put a big old Musky on the end of her line, and watch her jump out of her skin. I caught one of these muskies once, scared the crap out of me, these fish hiss and snap at you!!!

This coming fall I am going to be on a lake renowned for musky fishing. I am going to let the guide take them off the hook. I’ll enjoy the fight, though.

With enough beer, I might noodle one of these muskies. YEA, right.

Thanks Stoat, that’s it. I couldn’t remember what they called it but it was noodling. Did you see the snake that swam by in the second video? Yikes!

I saw that. Was amazed.

I live on a beautiful, clean and clear lake in upper east Tennessee. I can stand in water up to my chin and have little fry, tiny bluegill, etc., nibble on my feet and legs, and see them like looking through a glass window.

It tickles. I never dreamed someone would make money off this.
