“If we are going back to ‘a fundamentalist bible thumping alternative universe’, then maybe we will get a better generation in the future.”

If we go back to that, we won’t get some mythical Ward and June Cleaver ‘50s paradise. We’ll get Saudi Arabia. Backwardness, misogyny, fanaticism that provides a ripe breeding ground for terrorism, girls burning to death in a building because they’re not allowed to run outside to safety with their ankles showing. A land with enormous potential due to its vast oil wealth, thrown away because its people handicap themselves by treating women as chattel and not allowing them to be everything they could be. Yes, that’s what we’ll get, except it’ll be cloaked in a cross instead of a crescent.

That is the biggest steaming pile of excrement I have ever read.

So, fundamentalist Christian faith is a step away from extremist Islamic fundamentalism ???

Of all of the posts here, yours consists of the most drivel. I don't know what condition is, but you need to increase your medication.

All the children need - which is why they are such well-adjusted, articulate and energetic individuals.

And you know this because?

beasts instead of people

Mindless procreation is an animal trait

18 children coming from 18 pairs of parents represents a precipitous demographic decline of 50% - a trend that would represent a demographic death spiral within 40 years.

And yet the population of the usa increases precipitously. Breeding is not much of an accomplishment . After all getting pregnant doesn't require any great intellectual activity, and it isn't physically difficult. so what's the great admiration for people who are simply demonstrating that their reproductive organs work?

THEY are paying for them without one dime out of YOUR pocket,

See post #37

They are excellent parents raising responsible, respectful citizens to be self-supporting, loving, godly individuals as they grow up

LOL You know this how - read it on their web site did you?

More families just like this are needed

What for? I gotta go with Groucho Marx on this one. Groucho to female contentant "You have 11 children? Why?" Female contestant "Well I love my husband." Groucho "Well I love my cigar too, but I take it out of my mouth every now and then."

I am putting on my best asbesto right now...because, I know I shall be flamed...but...

Though I will concede the Duggars seem like very nice people, conservative Christians, homeschoolers, yada yada yada...BUT they have made themselves a 'public' commodity by inviting the cameras into their family home and receiving payment for the intrusion (which allowed them to finally build the size home they needed). A win/win situation? Duggars get cash, notority and Lifetime gets some ratings (and a few appliance type sponsors get free publicity for the placement of their products in ChezDuggar...) No problem...except the camera tends to capture more than is intended in these reality type shows.

Mrs. D seems a bit (ok alot) spacey...detached or something. And the girls. If you have watched their shows...wow...those girls are workhorses...should kids have responsibilities absolutely...do chores...yes! Run a small laundromat day after day of their teen years...no. Sorry...but Jinger (Jinger?) looked 14 going on 40; she was decribing in great detail her laundry process and it was sad. Depressing. She was thrilled to have front loaders (in her early teens!). There was another episode where the family did a road trip...and met up with another huge family...ok...alot of similarities...things to share. And what did the camera capture...well...how about an equally spacey mom of the other fam and their teenage daughter telling a Duggar teenage daughter about her grocery shopping and pantry inventories. These girls were 16...no way should they be the chief cook, grocery impressarios for their parents large family. Again...don't bring those cameras in if you don't want the vignettes captured. These girls were spending their teen years mothering, mentoring, cooking and cleaning to excess due to the size of their family. Being responsible is one thing...but being handed a sibling (to mentor and teach) and given several hundred pounds of laundry weekly is just too much (IMO). Again...asbestos at the ready...but if you honestly have watched their programs...well, you have seen it too.

I’ve watched some of their specials and I am very impressed. You have to laugh at the half dozen washers, dryer and ovens!

I don’t know the Duggars but I know some families who are followers of Bill Gothard/ATI. Their girls do not go to college.

"18 children coming from 18 pairs of parents"

alot of those "18" are not having children....

and we can't keep any semblance of our society...granted, that anymore it may not be a society we want to keep.....if we have only the illegals or the idiots or the trash having the children while responsible and loving married Christian couples choose to stay childless....

there is a alot of nonsense out there about college costs.....yes, they are high and ridiculous but state colleges and two year colleges are within reach of anyone....

are we the only people in America that couldn't afford to have big college nest eggs for our children?.....honestly, we saved for our retirement where we could and provided well for the kids, but saving for college was out of the question....

we've gotten two thru though.....some loans but also we paid money monthly for room and board, etc....

college is doable.....most college educations are meaningless anyway unless the recipient has the get up and go afterwards...

probably the best way is for MORE families to have a few more children and not depend on the Duggars or the Mormons to be providing our next generation....

I wanted a lot of kids but we stopped at 3.....I wish we had more in many ways....

of course I've got a cousin who just welcomed his 10th child....LOL

If you don'tt, why are you here

I love the nastiness with which the barefoot and pregnant crowd attacks anyone who questions their worship of fertile sex. As to the kids being the nicest and all of that BS unless you have some proof that you know them personally and quite well I'll take that with a grain of salt after all anyone can claim anything on the internet.

I have heard repeatedly on this thread "we need more people like this." Again I ask why? As near as I can tell their only distinguishing characteristic is the ability and willingness of the wife to get pregnant again as soon as she's dropped one. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but it isn't any great intellectual feat to get pregnant, and it doesn't take any great physical skill, so what is their characteristic that makes them so admirable? Welfare queens exhibit have this same attitude, dropping kids as long as they're fertile, and the only difference is that they get the taxpayers to pick up the tab. But there are lots of conservative families that don't breed like rats and mice who also don't get the taxpayer to pay for their kids. SO other than the fact that these people don't follow Groucho's advice about his cigar what's so special about them that "we need more of them"?

My sons got scholarships and paid their own way in college...

Hmmm scholarship as a greatly abused word these days and doesn't mean what it did a generation ago. Almost all "scholarships" are based on "need" these days. In fact I know that every so-called scholarship at my old undergraduate institution is based on "need." Which enables me to torment the people who call every month asking for money when they ask for it for scholarships. But back to the main subject: Tell me were these monetary grants based on need or on demonstrated intellectual/athletic ability.
