US Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) is saluted as he steps off an osprey upon arriving at Marka Airport in Amman, Jordan, July 22, 2008.
Wrong. It is a tiltrotor, not a helicopter.
Thank you for logging on and setting everybody straight.
And, OBTW, the Manual does say in certain ceremonial situations that a salute is apporpriate. I suppose these conditions must probably cover that.
If so, then, my bad. I still do not feel Obama deserves or warrants it at this stage, IMHO, his trip is a thinly veiled political opportune grabbing venture and not worthy of salute. But that is just my own opinion, nothing more.
Thats a United States Marine, not a soldier. Big difference.
Okay, no offense intended.
Would you care to expand on that?
Good catch, I hadn't noticed that at first. However, given the flight helmet he's wearing which (likely) has a microphone built in, a face mask anda set of goggles over the helmetrs to be in about the right position.
I wore one of those helmets for a couple of years as an aircrewman, that's how I know how the front is configured.
A military person can render a salute to anyone. They are required to salute the President.
It shows the Marine and he is not saluting.

The Marine crew chief is doing exactally what he was instructed to do as directed by the pilot (a LtCol). The pilot researched the Customs and Courtesies orders before the flight knowing that the Sen. would be onboard.
This Marine is definitely one of our finer crew chiefs in this unit and we could use more like him. As any military or previous military member will tell you, we don’t have to like what we are told to do but we still have to carry out our orders.

I'll be watching your posts with interest.

Hey BTW, are you required to watch Fox News, as Obama hinted was the case today????
Not really, mainly just defending our crew chirf since he’s kinda young and upset that there are so many people upset at the situation. He’s just learning to take it with a grain of salt that everyone has opinions.
Admirable that you do so. I wouldn't expect less of a fellow Marine.
Sorry he is getting so much static about the salute.
Let him and the rest of the crew know that we appreciate their service to our country.
