I don't know about the RAF, but being a crewman in a B-17 in 1942-43 was the most risky place you could be even more than a Marine in the Pacific, in all of WW II.

We saw a show on Masterpiece Theater several years ago about RAF pilots, early in WWII, and the premise of the show was about the pilots who flew, and how dangerous it was for them. Nigel Havers was the star, and it was a fascinating program.
