POTTER VALLEY

Woman tries to kill mice, shoots self

Published: Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at 4:30 a.m.

Last Modified: Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at 6:42 a.m.

A Potter Valley woman wounded herself and a man July 3 while attempting to kill mice with a .44-caliber Magnum revolver, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.

The woman, 43, had drawn the gun from a holster under her left arm, intending to shoot mice scurrying across the floor of a small travel trailer on Highway 20 in Potter Valley, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The revolver instead slipped from her hand and fired as it struck the floor, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The bullet went through the woman's right kneecap, then hit keys hanging on the belt loop of a 42-year-old man in the trailer, officials said. The bullet glanced off the keys and tore a hole in the man's pants.

The bullet grazed the man's groin before stopping in his coin pocket, where it was recovered for evidence, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The names of the shooting victims were not released.

Trailer park mousetrap recipe.

Place one five gallon bucket on floor. Drill two holes thru sides near top of bucket. String a piece of wire thru two holes.

Pop can of beer and drink. Drill hole in bottom of can. String can thru wire. Make sure it freely rotates on wire.

Buy jar of peanut butter. Smear peanut butter on can.

Find small board about two feet long as a mouse running ramp. Set board against lip of bucket.

Go to bed.

Empty mice from bucket into neighbor’s house next morning.

Repeat as necessary.

.......42-year-old man in the trailer and grazed the man's groin before ending up in his coin pocket.

Exactly what wound up in his watch pocket after the bullet hit his groin?

I LOVE this country. I CHERISH the Second Amendment. I am not sure they envisioned it being used to use a .44 caliber to kill mice though.

Does the Old Model Blackhawk have no hammer-block safety?

A free-floating firing pin?

She obviously wasn’t carrying it hammer down on an empty chamber.

A .44 slug is the last thing I would try to hit a mouse with. What an idiot.

This woman is Blessed that her stupidity was not fatal.

A .44 slug would have killed her had it hit her in the torso region.

She's pretty brave to go after mice with just a .44.

I wouldn't go after mice with anything smaller than my Desert Eagle .50AE.

I found the original story on a non-Associated Press source, and replaced the AP title, replaced the AP content, replaced the link to the AP story then attributed the original writer.

Please don't post any AP stories. Thanks.

We’re not going to pay AP’s extortion fees and we’re not going to allow them to control free speech!

Epic fail, unless she called out "eight ball in the corner pocket" before she fired, in which case I would say, well done, ma'am.

The original BlackHawk could discharge a round if the revolver fell with sufficient force on the hammer spur when the hammer was resting on a loaded chamber. It was effectively a safe, five shot revolver. The New Model Blackhawk has a safety bar preventing the hammer from actuating the firing pin unless directed by the trigger.
