Correction to my previous post. It’s the Osprey Inn on the grounds at Parris Island. Here is the link for their home page.

I’m not sure the ‘details’ of how the notice transpired, but he was ‘informed’ he would be in VN within a few months.
I graduated from PI in '66 and was "informed" more than a few times by my DIs where I was headed.
But before I got my orders I went through advanced infantry training first, then artillery school, and then I was stationed with a mortar battery at Pendleton for a few months before I "volunteered" for VN.

I can't disagree with you but:
How would the personnel at PI know the needs of units in VN? Their only requirement is to assign a basic MOS, then pass you on to ITR.
What were you doing at the Stumps - arty school?
I have never heard of the MC using color coded cards.

My only knowledge or advice: bring lots of Kleenex! You will come close to dying of pride.

I was a “Hollywood” Marine :)

Went to Arty school at Pendleton.

Stumps was where I went after schools....at that time, just a big arty base....and a place reserves went to fulfill their 2 week a year commitment.

I had this red card (3x5 or 5x7, I forget)on the jacket of my SRB right out of boot camp. If i'm lyin, i'm dying !

I got my orders cut 5/70 to VN 7/70, and landed in VN as an individual replacement...as a grunt

I could never get a 96 hour pass...I'm thinking it's because i was red tagged.

i tried to google something about it....no luck Guess it'll take another Marine in around the same time as I to back me up.

If you had been "red tagged" you wouldn't have gone to the Stumps. You would have gone straight from arty school to Staging Bn. which was also at Pendleton.
I went from arty school to Whiskey Battery, 3/13 (four deuce mortars) as part of the build up of the 5th Mar Div.
A month or so later the division was officially reactivated, we had a grand parade and a few days later I had my orders for WestPac. Wham, bam, thank you ma'am.

No problem.

FYI,

After you take your MARINE back to his barracks in the evening, there’s a TGI Fridays anda couple of other restaurants just down the road from the base. Nice way to relax and prepare for the ceremony.

The exchange has a lot of nice things for souvenirs, however your MARINE will have to show his ID to purchase.

I assume your going this month, so be forewarned, I don’t recall seeing much shade on the bleachers. I can’t recall any water fountains, so plan accordingly.

Take care...

...(there's a great/& popular seafood restaurant close by ...)

You may be thinking of the "Saltus Grill" on the waterfront (Bay Street) of downtown Beaufort. We had dinner there before we left, Food Excellent!

There’s plenty of hotels in Beaufort. Just make sure to call up and get your reservations in as early as possible. Get there the night before “Family Day” because the recruits do a “motivation run” early in the morning, and then a later-morning presentation and Q&A session in a big new building (it’s like a super-size gymnasium - - I forget what it’s called). Then you can spend most of the day (up until about 1700 I believe) touring freely around the island with your niece.

The following day is graduation which, if it’s a red flag day, may be held in the Lyceum building instead of out on the Parade Deck.

Good luck, and have fun!

Remember, it’s BYOO-FERT in SC and BO-FERT in NC.

That's like NEWark in New Jersey and NewARK in Delaware.
