The base reasoning as I understand it is that the new jugs allow for less transport/storage cost thus should result in savings to the customer. We'll see.

seems to me a simple screw on spout should do the trick....
Looking at that pic I can see why it would spill. I am not a structural engineer but it seems to me that the front of the carton would collapse a little when you pour from it causing a burp effect.
