I really don’t believe him. If he is serious, then it is pretty creepy. Caroline Kennedy was 12 years old in 1969. How was she an inspiration about a song involving spending the night with a lover and touching one another?

I don’t know. Ive listened to the song for years and tonight is the first time I ever read the words to the song....

Where it began

I can’t begin to knowin’

but then I know it’s growin’ strong.
Was in the spring

then spring became the summer.
Who’da believed you’d come along ?
Hands
touchin’ hands

reachin’ out

touchin’ me
touchin’ you.

Sweet Caroline

good times never seemed so good.
I’ve been inclined
to believe they never would.
But now I -

Look at the night
and it don’t seem so lonely

we fill it up with only two.
And when I hurt

hurtin’ runs off my shoulders

how can I hurt when holdin’ you ?
Warm
touchin’ warm

reachin’ out

touchin’ me
touchin’ you.

Sweet Caroline

good times never seemed so good.
I’ve been inclined
to believe they never would.
Oh
no
no.

I read a while back how song writers will come up with a catchy line- and then write a whole song around that line. Caroline Kennedy may have been the inspiration for the “Sweet Caroline” hook name and then he came up with a song that used the catchy name. Often the original inspiration can be far from the finished song. Or he could be a pervert :-)

I don’t believe him either. But, then again, Cracklin’ Rosie might have been about her grandmother.

I have heard this before. I like the song but have to agree with the above poster. “If he is serious, then it is pretty creepy”

Coincidentally I heard the song driving into work yesterday and thought about how much I liked the song. I’m giving Neil the benefit of a doubt and assume he meant he just used Caroline’s name.

None of this changes the fact that both the Red Sox and Yankees (and their fan base) deserve to go the way of the Taino Indians.

If this song was inspired by Caroline Kennedy, it wasn’t the first. In 1962, Jo Ann Morse, recording as Little Jo Ann, scored with “My Daddy is President” (Kapp Records #467) which made it into the Billboard Hot 100.

My CO, Mike Groves, Honor Guard Co., 1st Bn, 3rd Inf. Regt., The Old Guard, was a favorite of Jackie Kennedy. She would request him to baby sit Caroline and little John. Imagine, a hard chargin’ infantry captain tapped for baby sitting duty by the First Lady, but he loved doing it. The assassination of JFK was an extremely stressful time for Captain Groves. In spite of the fact that he was in top physical shape, he suffered a heart attack and died shortly after the burial of Pres. Kennedy.
