I didn’t get to Arthur Bryant’s (maybe next time) but I did get to have some Gates BBQ before Friday’s game. Gates was great, although my BBQ tastes aren’t as refined as some of the locals are. ;)
I noticed that. Part of Kauffman Stadium's renovation per the wisdom of the outfield scoreboard is to have fans pay for commemorative bricks that you can put messages on and it will stand in front of the stadium in perpetuity--like this one.
The brick in the middle of this pic reads in case you can't make it out:
"The Right Call Was Made...And We Were There! Game 6 10/26/85. Erin and Curt Nelson"
I do wonder though, do Cardinals fans still send death threats to Don Denkinger now that they have another World Series title?
Hope you do have a chance to come back. It's a nice place to visit, and a pretty good place to live as well.
I did ask the waitress if there was any way I could get some of their chicken sent back to Idaho and that kind of lead to t he “you came all the way from Idaho for the baseball games this weekend?” I got that a lot from people all weekend...but I will say it was more than worth it.
Eh, Cardinal fans will never get over the '85 series if they live to be 100, and their team wins 50 titles during that span. It is very much a cross-state rivalry thing. That and a general lack of maturity on the part of St. Louis fans.
I’m a local and have never been crazy about barbecue. I think it’s the sauce - when I go to Gates I order it on the side or have them put very little on the meat.

Well, I had the dark chicken (2 legs and 2 thighs) meal along with the mashed potatoes and some chicken noodle soup—with a Boulevard Wheat Beer. My Dad had the Chicken Fried Chicken, although he had reservations about the gravy on his mashed potatoes. Me, being the younger generation and all, thorougly enjoyed the gravy...overall it was a fantastic experience...
I’m thinking that I really need to get there this weekend...
I’ll probably get the chicken breast / pork chop combo. YUM!
I actually grew up about 4 blocks from the original Strouds, and given its location, I’m surprised it lasted so long. It was a series traffic hazard! When they first built it, civilization in KC ended at Gregory Blvd, which is 71st street. There was a dirt road continuing south to 85th street. Eventually they paved the road, and actually put up a bridge for the traffic to allow Strouds keep operating.
I’m really glad you and your father had a good time here. Come on back any time you like... Maybe for a Chiefs/Raiders game! Those are always fun!
