Vista Service Pack 1 release
Windows Update | 6/13/2008 | DGHoodini

Posted on 06/13/2008 2:08:19 PM PDT by DGHoodini

For those of you running Vista, and have not set their systems to automatically download updates, I may have some good news for you. Today, my system DLed the SP1 for Vista, (It's large), and after installing and rebooting, many programs that opened/ran sluggishly, now start and perform, the way one would expect they'd run on a less than 1 yr old PC with 2 gigs of RAM.

Read this, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934538/en-us see if that helps you with your problem. I would recommend trying to reproduce one of the other symptoms before doing the repair.

...I was thinkin about the iMac Pro.

You mean the Mac Pro? That's really up there. I was thinking about it, too, but then I realized that with just one of the faster iMacs and Logic Pro, I have more recording and editing power than was available to anyone at any time in history up to the present day. I really don't need anything more powerful than that. Still, for games, it would be nice to have the Pro with the best video card available.

I keep getting the following...

Error Details Code 80073712

Have searched and searched but have been unable to really find any solution. Also seems to be a lot of complaints out there that there isn't a solution.

I know jack squat about computers.

What is confusing to me though is periodically one segment of an update will be "successful" and a bunch of others have "Failed".

Like today. Definition updates for Windows Defender was successful. All others failed.

Infact, when I check my update history, the only one that is successful is the defender updates. All others fail.

I found a solution to the Vista Windows update error and have tried posting it to the thread. But twice it did not appear ans since all I got was a blank page when I submitted the post, I figured something was wrong.

I am sure your readers would like to have this because it totally worked for me and was easy. Trust me, I have tried everything else short of re-installing Vista.

So here is the solution that worked:

1. Open the start menu.

2. Type “cmd” into the search and right click on “cmd.exe” and choose “Run as Administrator”

3. Type in “takeown /f C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml”

4. Type in “cacls C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml /G < USERNAME >:F” Note: Your user name will display when you execute step three. (Don’t enter the “< “ or “>“)

5. Type in “del C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml”

6. Reboot

7. Downloaded & install the Windows update Agent.

32-bit Users Download it Here:

64-bit Users Get it Here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe

8. Start Windows update

Since its been so long since I have been able to update, Windows Update had to
update first!

I found the solution here: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?p=3050763

Hope it helps you.

I have not received an download notices from MS for SP1 as apparently there are still some driver issues.

For me it is the Sigma Tel Audio driver and another one I don't recall. Maybe you have similar issues.

Do you search the MS Knowledge base? I had a problem similar to yours when first was updateing Vista Home Premium OEM Install from Dell. I found an article on an update that when it partially installed caused the problem. I uninstalled/deleted the update, reapplied it in the correct order (manually) in the recommended order, and haven't had the problem since.

SP1 was available, but not being distributed via Windows Update when I installed it. I checked th KB and found out that the current Intel Graphics driver I had installed was causing a problem with the update. So I rolled it back, forced the SP1 update, and everything worked fine. About a week later Intel came out with a patch, and I updated that driver as well. Vista is really no different than any other new OS, it's a learning curve for both the users and distributer.

the error code sometimes is harder to search than the text, what was the text of the error?

Read about the conflict and note the version of the driver that conflicts. If there is a newer one available at sigmatel’s web site, it may solve the compatibility issue. In my case, downgrading a couple of drivers solved the problem. Shortly after the install, I upgraded them and have had no issues.

Thanks...But from what I have found out is that Sigma Tel was bought by Dell and it was Dell who was responsible to update the driver. As for now it's a mess but should be worked out in time.

Vista seems to work OK for me now with the exception of a few conflicts in some programs I had but can live with out. I am not up on what SP1 is supposed to do or fix but for now if it ain't broke....

Just after I posted the question I got another notice to download SP 1 . I installed it and upon reboot got the notice windows had encountered an problem and would shut down in one minute . Same as before . I tried rebooting a few times , same thing . Just for the heck of it I turned off my quest modem before reboot . This time everything worked , for a while . I turned the modem back on and waited . No problem . I then clicked Internet explorer and the problem notice came on again and shut down . I used system recovery again and guess I will do without updates till , I learn what the hell I am doing .

My idea of a service pack for the Vista “operating system” would be to boot up to a ‘live CD’ and ‘FORMAT c:’

Vista is a curse to anyone who has a computer it’s installed on....

Speak english. I know what you said, but have no idea what you said. I believe i have a driver problem as well with the Intel graphics driver. Or something like that.

Which windows update do I need to uninstall and reinstall? And how do I get the patch for the intel graphics thingy?

There are two Service Packs that are prerequisites for the SP1 Install.
First 949939 found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=1ADF1D6C-AD46-4D09-A99C-BA3B1D9BCF4F&displaylang=en
Second 937287 found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5639710d-dfbf-4527-806e-9a1634d0cc8e&displaylang=en

After that read the article on installing Vista SP 1 found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936330/en-us

I also had found an article on reasons why VISTA SP1 might not install through Windows Update which is where I found my original information before my installation. It is here, and lists known conflicts at the time of SP1’s release. I strongly suspect you might find your answers here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343/en-us I can try to help, but I need specific information on your system to do this.

Oh, and if you are running Vista Ultimate with BitLocker, there is at least one more prerequisite to get SP1 up and running. I think the reason why your Windows Update is note working is because you have an update that was a prereq that did not install correctly. It would need to be uninstalled, and re-downloaded and installed.

You should receive a specific error if it is the activation key.
