Denver Post ^

Excerpt: Friends of New Orleans, a charity formed to help that city recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, is paying for the party, and for a concert with New Orleans-style food at the Fillmore Auditorium afterward for the 6,000 delegates and their guests on Aug. 24, the Sunday before the convention opens.

Is it normal for a charity formed to help a stuggling city to pay for an event like this? Am I missing something?

I’m glad I didn’t contribute to any charities after Katrina hit because of my concerns for corruption with funds collected. My concerns obviously were with reason.

Never give liberals control of anything but themselves because they will find a way to screw it up or steal from those who they should be helping.

Friends of New Orleans is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, membership organization that provides a vehicle for people in the US and abroad who care about this region, to declare their support and get involved.

Our mission is to:

Advocate for New Orleans and its surrounding parishes;
Inform people of those key issues that are shaping the national debate and decision making of the rebuilding effort;
Link individuals who want to help with the communities in the devastated areas;
Motivate people to take part in the rebuilding effort by: a) declaring their support for New Orleans and its surrounding parishes; b) donating money; c) volunteering; d) visiting and investing in the area; and e) partnering with communities and local organizations that are doing the work.

Good grief I didn't even see that in there before. I just looked around a bit and laughed at the mission statement when I first went in.

I’m glad I didn’t contribute to any charities after Katrina hit because of my concerns for corruption with funds collected. My concerns obviously were with reason.

After the waters from Katrina went down (a couple of days in the Metairie area) our church members cleaned our parking lot of debris and started feeding and clothing the people of NOLA and the surrounding area. With the help of CHURCHes and volunteers from across the nation, local donations,and 2nd Harvesters, we were able to feed over 200,000 people for many weeks. People sent in clothes from all over the country. Tents were set up as a grocery, clothing tent, and an a tent where food was served daily. Every cent went to Katrina Victims. As for charities, I don’t know what happened to the donations. Most news coverage was about the 9th ward and the displaced people. But, we were quietly taking care of our own as best we could. It saddens me that if we take another hit by a hurricane we will have a harder time recovering that we already had.

I hope you are back to normal now. We had flood waters in my area but I am blessed that my small part of our street is higher than the rest so I didn’t get water in my house. My heart goes out to all who have had to suffer through this nightmare. I especially feel for the elderly who lost everything.

As normal as things can be in N.O. Haha. yes, everything. But we rebuilt. 1 year and 3 days and we were home. We have a strong little block here. Most of my neighbors have returned. thanks so much for caring enough to ask. Oour church struggles along. alot of our members were elderly and have had to move on. As you know this took a tremendous toll on them. My father passed 1 month after seeing his home of 65yrs. completely destroyed. he just seemed to give up.

I am so sorry about your father but, I am glad for your recovery. This August it will be 3 years since Katrina and I am truly amazed at the recovery considering the devastation we witnessed. When I opened my door the next morning I couldn’t believe what I saw. Today, it is as though, physically the storm never happened in my area, but mentally it still rages on at times. God bless you and your family.

Yes dellbabe 68 you are missing something. In fact this entire board has missed something important. The article was in error and was retracted the next day by the Denver Post and by Rush Limbaugh.

See the Denver Post correction at:http://www.denverpost.com/search/ci_9495767 or the Friends of New Orleans statement regarding this issue at: http://www.friendsofneworleans.org/ The DNC is paying for the event not Friends of New Orleans.

Friends of New Orleans has planned benefit events at both the democratic convention and the Republican Convention to highlight the organizations working to repair New Orleans. Friends of New Orleans has said that they are not giving any money to the DNC, any candidates or any PAC's.

I am not affiliated with Friends of New Orleans and not a liberal. I'm a lifelong Republican. I did take the time though to read the original article and several others retracting the original article before posting.

I am from the New Orleans area and have toured the damaged areas many times. I can tell you nothing you saw on TV gives it justice. A camera has a very narrow view. When you drive the streets you see the same destruction go on for mile after mile, neighborhood after neighborhood. it's truly impossible to imagine by looking at news footage or pictures.

Something the national liberal media routinely fails to point out is that the storm didn't discriminate. It wasn't just poor black neighborhoods such as the lower 9th ward that were destroyed. Rich white neighborhoods were destroyed as well.

I applaud the efforts of groups such as Friends of New Orleans who continue to work to help rebuild the city and bring awareness of the daily struggles to rebuild. I'd hate to imagine where the city would be without them. One way each of you could help the city is to come visit. The city has a lot to offer and is a very popular and fun tourist city. It isn't just for adults. There is plenty for children to see and do. Most of the business district and tourist attractions were spared by the storm and are up and running. The French Quarter, the oldest part of town, was built above sea level so it didn't flood. The dollars you spend while you are having fun will help the area recover. And if you want you can spend a day working with a volunteer group. If you do, it will be a vacation you'll never forget. (For the record I am not in the hospitality, tourism or volunteer business). The City of New Orleans and the surrounding areas have enough problems without creating controversy were there is none. The report was wrong. The drive by media is famous for reporting negative information when it makes a conservative issue look bad then failing to correct the story when the facts come out. Conservatives are better than that. Rush corrected his story. If you posted or read messages on other boards regarding this erroneous story please correct them. I know I'm long winded. If you read this far, thank you.
