The model # of the new “thingie” (not so sure it is a router anymore) is EZXS55W.
The box states:
10/100
5-Port
Workgroup Switch
Enjoy Full-Deplux, Dedicated Bandwidth in a Compact, Modular Design
Each port independently detects 10Mbps or 100Mbps speed
Seamless integration with your existing 10BaseT, 100BseTX or 10/100 network
Channels full-duplex, dedicated bandwithe to each prot for sptimal performance.
*whew*
its a switch
Next step will be to figure out what lights are lit on it.
However your "get a different thingie" is probably a better next step, because it is not safe to connect Windows boxes to Comcast using Switches. They don't provide any Firewall protection from incoming bad guys.
Gnight Hon. gotta go
That’s your problem you don’t have a router you just have a switch. I have DSL through CenturyTel. My DSL modem goes to a Belkin Wireless N router/switch ( model #F5D8233 ), and from there I run it to a Netgear JFS-524 to connect the rest of the network. You need a some kind of wireless router with a built in switch so you can use more than one computer at a time. By connecting your computer directly to the internet through only a switch and the cable modem you were “E-X-P-O-S-E-D” to the internet with only the minimal “protection” your ISP provides
It's not a router. Manual here.
That raises the question of what capabilities the Comcast cable modem box has. Sometimes they will come with a router built in. If not, you will want to put a real router between the cable box and your computers (both so that you can have more than one computer share the connection and to provide firewalling).
Yup, definately NOT a router. I FReepMailed you earlier. Call me if you like.
