AP ^ | May 28, 2008 | AP

For almost 60 years, Dianne Odell lived inside a 7-foot-long metal tube, unable to breathe outside it but determined not to let it destroy her spirit.

Odell, 61, died Wednesday when a power failure shut off electricity to the tube and stopped the pump drawing air into her lungs.

2 Timothy 4:

6For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing

As a member of the “silent generation”, I well remember the scourge of polio. Most of us had at least one friend, neighbor or classmate hobbled by braces. What a great country we live in that has all but eliminated this once common sight.

That this brave woman had survived so long in a lung is not only a testament to her fortitude, but also to the dedication of her care givers. The guilt they must now feel is unimaginable.

That being said, PM and test your generators on a regular basis. Even if you don’t need them for life sustaining machines.

Some of us have 02 canisters and if nothing else we pull out the bag and pump by hand.

That's nice. Some of us have clock radios, which is just as relevant.

An O2 bottle doesn't help someone in an iron lung. All it does is increase the concentration of oxygen in the air she's not breathing. A hand ventilator is slightly less useless. An iron lung expands and contracts the chest cavity; it doesn't just push air.

I did not know that.

Unlike a brain or spinal injury on a respirator the Iron lung works more exterior?

The only people I know who have polio are those who are going through a relapse of symptoms in late age and it is not to the extreme of needing durable equipment to assist them other than maybe a cane.

Yes, she was a Valiant Lady.

She earned a high school diploma, took college courses, and wrote a children's book. Prayers for the family.

Don't play mind checkers with me smartass. The poster made a valid point that you apparently didn't agree with or even understand, so you replied with an ad hominem insult. What goes around, comes around.

Nice link to her busy social life.

Does anyone know why the vaccine went from a sugar cube to an innoculation?

With people questioning the other elements in the vaccine ....I wonder why they stopped using the sugar cube method.

Speaking from personal experience, iron lungs can be operated manually for several hours, or by backup battery. It wouldn’t have taken even $1000 to get a generator. My Cabelas catalog offers a Champion generator for $399.

My thought also.

I tried to find her children's book, "Blinky, Less Light." Apparently it has sold out.

Like Odell’s, Nick’s story is inspirational. IMO, they led/lead happier lives than those who constantly whine.

Then you must be hovering in mid-air because you haven't done anything but call someone a jerk. There's no ground for you to stand on.

Check out #34. They’re still arguing about a generator, and obviously neither one read the article.
