Per popular demand, after the very successful "Who Is Your Favorite Drummer?" thread, here we have a new posting to determine who is your favorite guitarist of all time.
I’m not familiar with Baez (I know who she is) - but John Denver was a fantastic acoustic guitar player. On the country side, John Michael Montgomery can really jam. I saw him live and was really surprised.
I have never seen him live but have a friend who saw him in Vegas a couple of years back who said it was the single best live performance he had ever seen. IMHO Prince is simple the greatest living musician and artist. He does it all. Sings, plays all the instruments on his records, writes, produces. He is an absolute genius. I hope to see him live one day as well.
And a better guitarist to boot. ;-)
Cheers!
Need I remind you that nearly half of the guys listed here are ‘gay’?
Dave Davies doesn’t show up until post #214. May not be the best guitarist ever but the most underrated IMHO. Also love Jorma, Garry Davis, Page, Clapton, Hendrix, Harrison, Burton, but especially Page. Oh and I guess no one mentioned Robert Johnson either.
And for another off the wall choice - she can’t play a lick of lead, but Emmylou plays a damn fine rhythm guitar - a perfect accompaniment for a perfect voice.
Oh and SRV.
I was lucky enough to have seen Spirit at Mile Square Park in Orange County, California, October 1991. They had just come together for a short time to promote the new CD, Chronicles. I remembered it was the same week that the Oakland Fires destroyed part of Oakland and the rock promoter of Filmore East died in a helicopter crash.
I’ve seen them about 5 times, the first two when Cory was still in the band. I definitly liked their show better when she was with them!
I work at the Uof I Assembly Hall in Champaign,IL. as a loader. Prince came through about 4 years ago and I checked out part of the show. I wasn’t a fan but he was awesome! He changed a lot of the arrangments around and it was more like an R&B show from the ‘60’s or early ‘70’s!
Bill Nelson-—Sunburst Finish, Crying to the Sky. Great riff.
Joanie is pretty good, I thought of naming her too.
But even better, when it comes to girl guitarists, I like Bonnie Raitt:).
I had to add one more to the list. He’s out of Austin TX.
Monte Montgomery
Since “youtube” I feel in love with Chicago all over again, the Kath/Cetera music was the best and I watch them all the time.....I recently saw him in “Electra Glide in Blue” and Terry (small part) was great at the end...check it out if you get a chance.
I will. You know, I think the real genius of that band was the horn guy, Walter Parazider, I think his name was.
Steve Goodman.
Jerry Reed
Monte Montgomery
Tommy Emanuel
Chet Atkins
Merle Travis
Don Gibson
