There must be a lot of SF fans here. Who are you favorite authors or books? What are you currently reading?
I enjoy SF books that focus on character development over hard scifi themes. Robert Silverberg, IMO, is about the best there is. I also enjoy Gardner Duzois' short stories--some gut-wrenching stuff. Jack Vance's are also very entertaining. Orson Scott Card is pretty good too.
I am currently reading Altered Carbon, by Richard Morgan...it's kind of slow and hard to follow. Not likely to read his other novels.
I have enjoyed some, but not all, of Niven and Pournelle's works.
I’ve read the last two books in the Centauri Trilogy, and skimmed through the last book in the Psi-Corp Trilogy. What I saw, I liked.
Absolutely! Second only to Tolkien IMHO.
Anne McAffreys PERN/Dragon Riders series
I will second that one too, at least the first 6 books...
Paul O. Williams "The Pelbar Cycle" Is another good tale.
David Eddings "Belgariad" is yet another, while simple and straight forward, it is excellent and easy to read.
Piers Anthony is a bit bent, but his "Blue Adept" is worth a look.
A lot of people flirted with communism back then.
On your recommendation, I took the book on vacation. It was a pretty good book. If it had been written twenty years later I'm sure Shandon would have shared some Lembas bread with Frodo and Samwise Gamgee.
Maybe. I suspect Frodo and Sam are residents in the “newer” areas that were under construction.
Still, its a great book.
Have you read the whole series? I was recommended this book and just downloaded it. I hope it is worth the $6.95. Thankfully it wasn't 6.95 Renminbi.
H Beam Piper,
Poul Anderson,
John Brunner,
Frederick Pohl,
Murray Leinster and many more....
A Game of Thrones
A Storm of Swords
A Clash of Kings
A Feast for Crows
Next one should be out any DECADE now (he has taken a long time for the fifth book).
Right now HBO is doing a series, which I hope will be EPIC!
Really well told stories, great characters, amazing scenes and dialog.
“When you play a game of thrones there are no half measures, you play to win, or you die.” Queen Cersi Lannister
I watched some of the trailers tonight. Since I really have no idea what the books are about it didn’t make much sense, but I have read the first chapter tonight.
I’m on a Storm of Swords now. I’m sitting on the deck watching the black birds fly South and can’t put the series down. It might be a good thing that he hasn’t come out with the fifth book so I can get some things done.
Waiting for the HBO series, first I guess I have to get HBO!
So.... which character is your favorite?
:)
I like Jon, Arya, and Tyrion. Varys is a good character and I think Daenerys will be a good character once the dragons start to become more of the plot line.
John and Arya are fun, but as a character - I would put Tyrion up there against any character from literature as far as complexity of motivation and emotion.
Such great lines throughout, by so many characters.
“When you play a game of thrones, there are no half measures- you play to win, or you die” Cearsie Lanister
“Rhaegar. I could kill him for what he did to her.” Robert ‘the Usurper’ Barratheon.
“You did kill him, on the Trident.” Ned Stark
“ONLY ONCE!” Robert
Be sure to check out “the Lies of Locke Lamora” by Scott Lynch as well. Re-reading it now. Amazing.
The first several books in the “Wheel of Time” series are rather good....I would not go much past book 4 though.
HOLY ZOMBIE THREAD, BATMAN!!!
Ok, after I am done with this one I will check out Lynch. Thanks for the heads up (unless it consumes too much of my time). ;)
I finished the series. Great books, but I can't believe it has taken him this long to write the next one. He will probably release the next book right before his HBO series comes out to hype it. Synergy and all.
The end with Ceresi is pretty good. She is set up as such a hate-able character. With the prophecy that says her younger brother will kill her and a younger and more beautiful queen will take her place. She thinks it will be Tyrion and Margeary but I think the prophecy speaks about Jaime and Daenerys instead.
